Channel 4’s new take on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s classic novel, A Woman of Substance, has been a hit with viewers online after its first episode aired. This version, starring Brenda Blethyn as Emma Harte and Jessica Reynolds as the young Emma, comes 41 years after a popular adaptation with Jenny Seagrove in 1985.
The story follows Emma’s life over sixty years, from her beginnings as a poor servant in Yorkshire in the early 1900s to her success as a powerful businesswoman by the 1970s.
One viewer immediately praised Brenda Blethyn on X, calling her “so fabulous” and using the hashtag #AWomanOfSubstance.

Another viewer said “she’s incredible”, adding: “it’s amazing so far.”
It’s great to see a classic family drama set in Yorkshire back on TV! Someone commented that A Woman of Substance has that traditional ‘upstairs downstairs’ feel.
