A “totally gripping” Nordic noir: Sky confirms “bold” new drama based on phenomenal trilogy

Sky is creating a new version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the first book in the Millennium series. They’re describing it as a fresh and modern take on Stieg Larsson’s popular novel, and it sounds very promising!

This eight-episode show is based on the author’s 2005 novel. It follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander as they team up to solve a decades-old mystery.

Left Bank Pictures, the company behind shows like The Crown and Dept Q, is producing the new Nordic noir series. Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna, who previously worked together on Behind Her Eyes, are writing the episodes. Filming will begin shortly in Lithuania.

What to Read Next

According to Sky, the new take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo updates the story for modern audiences while staying true to the characters and investigative spirit of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, and explores themes that feel especially important now.

Stieg Larsson, the author, died before his novel was published, but he had planned for the Millennium series to include ten books. Before he passed away in 2004, he finished two more books in the series: The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.

Since Stieg Larsson’s death, David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff have continued the Millennium series. The latest book, The Girl with Ice in her Veins, came out in 2024, and a ninth installment is already in the works.

The first book in the Millennium series is arguably the most well-known and highly praised. Author Minette Walters described it as a “stunning thriller” that was “brilliantly written and totally gripping” (according to Amazon).

Stieg Larsson’s books were first made into a Swedish film series in 2009, starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace as Mikael and Lisbeth. The story was then revisited the next year as a six-part television series called Millennium.

The first book was made into a movie in 2011. Steven Zaillian wrote the script, and David Fincher directed. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara starred in the film, which was praised as a gripping mystery thriller.

So, after the first few books, they didn’t make TV episodes out of everything. But the whole series got a fresh start in 2018 with The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was based on a newer book by Lagercrantz. It was cool, but they switched things up – a different director, different writers, and Claire Foy took over as Lisbeth Salander from Rooney Mara.

Sky’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has no release date.
