A timeline of Conor McGregor’s criminal history [UPDATED July 2024]

As a seasoned journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from petty squabbles to life-altering scandals. The saga of Conor McGregor is one for the books, and I can’t help but feel a tinge of sympathy mixed with intrigue.

Conor McGregor is globally recognized as one of the top MMA fighters. His swift climb to fame, however, brought about its share of issues. Lately, McGregor’s antics outside the ring have garnered more attention compared to his in-ring performances.

Instead of linking Conor McGregor’s name with delinquency, we could say that his encounters with Khabib Nurmagomedov and subsequent events, such as the sexual assault allegations, have led many to associate him with controversy. Here’s a recap of the recent incidents involving Conor McGregor that have raised questions.

A timeline of Conor McGregor’s legal issues [UPDATED]

April 2018 – Conor McGregor throws dolly through bus window at UFC 223

Initially, UFC 223 encountered numerous difficulties. Firstly, Tony Ferguson got hurt, forcing a change in plans. Next, Max Holloway, who was brought in as a replacement for Ferguson, found it challenging to meet the weight requirements and had to withdraw. The situation worsened when Conor McGregor and his companions arrived at media day and started throwing items at Khabib Nurmagomedov’s bus, along with other fighters. This led to injuries among several fighters, causing them to withdraw from their scheduled bouts.

After running away from the incident, McGregor eventually surrendered at a police station in Brooklyn and was arrested. He faced one felony charge for criminal mischief and three misdemeanor charges for assault. Bail was set, allowing him to return to Ireland, his homeland. A plea deal was later proposed, resulting in a disorderly conduct conviction for McGregor. As part of the sentence, he completed five days of community service, paid restitution for the bus damage, and attended anger management classes. However, McGregor avoided jail time entirely.

August 2019 – Conor McGregor arrested in Miami for damaging phone

In March, while on vacation with his family in South Florida, Conor McGregor was taken into custody after grabbing and damaging a spectator’s cell phone. He faced charges for one count of robbery by sudden snatching (a type of robbery) and one count of minor property damage. Additionally, there was a civil lawsuit filed against him due to this incident.

After the incident, McGregor’s legal team expressed gratitude towards the police department for their handling of the situation and assured full cooperation. McGregor was granted a $12,500 bond. Eventually, both the criminal charges against him were dismissed, and the civil lawsuit was also withdrawn.

January 2019 – The first alleged sexual assault charge

Beginning in January, Irish law enforcement initiated an investigation involving a prominent Irish sports figure as a suspect in a rape case. Due to privacy regulations within the country, the identity of the man remained undisclosed. However, in March, The New York Times disclosed that the accusations centered around Conor McGregor.

Based on the reports, McGregor was detained in January without being charged. Following interrogation, officials released him. Soon after, McGregor declared his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). His retirement period has been marked by hints of a comeback and numerous challenges. However, given his ongoing legal issues, a return to MMA seems improbable. Since then, McGregor has been implicated in another sexual assault allegation. This investigation is still ongoing, and he has been involved in this new case.

November 2019 – Conor McGregor punches man in a bar in Dublin

In April, there were allegations that McGregor had physically attacked a man in a pub located in Dublin, Ireland. Subsequently, footage emerged showing McGregor striking the man on the side of his head. The man initially declined a shot from McGregor’s own brand of whiskey, Proper 12, which seemed to upset McGregor, leading him to strike the man. Following this incident, the bar staff asked McGregor to leave, and local law enforcement were summoned to examine the situation.

Confronting the possibility of spending up to six months behind bars due to an impending assault charge, McGregor’s initial court hearing has been postponed. He now has until November 1 to negotiate a plea agreement.

October 2020 – Second sexual assault charge

It was announced over the weekend that Conor McGregor is facing a second allegation of sexual assault. For several weeks prior, whispers about this second incident had been spreading. However, on October 19th, The New York Times officially verified McGregor’s involvement in the case.

According to the report, a young woman was allegedly sexually attacked in a car parked near a pub in Dublin. As of now, McGregor hasn’t been accused or charged with this offense. The Irish authorities are set to proceed with their probe, incorporating it into the ongoing investigation that began in January.

McGregor keeps hinting at his potential return to UFC, even though no fight has been formally arranged yet. It appears that Dana White and the UFC are eagerly anticipating his comeback. Lately, McGregor has suggested a December bout against Frankie Edgar and is still pursuing a rematch with Nurmagomedov.

March 2021 – Conor McGregor arrested for reckless driving

As reported by the Irish Independent, McGregor was taken into custody due to reckless driving, and his Bentley was temporarily confiscated as a result.

In my enthusiast’s perspective, as I was en route to the gym, I encountered a halt by Gardaí due to presumed traffic offenses. Subsequently, I submitted and passed drug and alcohol tests at the station, according to updates from Karen Kessler, my representative, as reported by Marc Raimondi of ESPN.

He faced charges for six offenses, among them were “two accusations of reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a valid license, not providing a driver’s license when requested, driving an uninsured vehicle, and failing to present proof of insurance.”

Jan. 2023 – Conor McGregor arrested for assaulting woman on his yacht

As a devoted fan, I’ve learned from various sources that there’s an ongoing investigation regarding Conor McGregor. A woman has claimed that while on his yacht, he suddenly exhibited aggressive behavior which made me, as well as others, concerned for our safety. She stated that his demeanor dramatically altered at that moment and she felt compelled to leave the yacht out of fear for her life.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I shared with the police that I leaped from a yacht into the waters surrounding Formentera Island, attempting to swim there. However, before reaching my destination, a Red Cross boat saved me. According to reports, I reported this incident in Ibiza and later again in Dublin upon my return. This sequence of events has triggered a court in Ibiza to reopen the ongoing investigation.”

According to MMA Junkie, the victim expressed her fear, stating, “He seemed like he was under some sort of control, not himself. I felt compelled to leave the boat as I feared for my life. … We share common acquaintances and I’ve interacted with him on multiple occasions. It’s unimaginable what happened to me. I never thought he would be capable of such acts. He’s a criminal, and I believe he might have taken my life if I hadn’t escaped the yacht.”

June 2023 – Conor McGregor accused of raping woman in bathroom at Miami Heat game

In June 2023, I found myself embroiled in an allegation of a heinous act – rape. This horrific accusation surfaced during the NBA Playoffs in Miami. The woman who brought this charge against me claims that she was lured into a bathroom by both NBA and my security personnel. Allegedly, I was hiding in a stall within this bathroom, whereupon her entry, I reportedly compelled her to engage in unwanted sexual acts.

Critics have raised doubts about the sincerity of the accuser’s intentions since various clips appear to contradict her account, and they find it peculiar that she requested compensation from both McGregor and the NBA instead of filing a police report and pressing formal charges.

According to her attorney, Ariel Mitchell, she initially went to the local police station but was instructed to go to another precinct where the incident occurred instead. Unfortunately, after approaching the correct precinct around 4:30 PM, she was asked to leave roughly a half-hour later. This implies that she encountered two instances of rejection as a victim of sexual assault.

On October 17th, according to TMZ, the authorities decided not to press charges against McGregor because there was not enough evidence and the testimonies provided were inconsistent or unverifiable.

July 2023 – Conor McGregor allegedly got into a bar brawl during a funeral

Based on TMZ reports, Conor McGregor is being implicated in a disturbance at The Saddle Club in Birkenhead, England, which occurred during a family funeral. Authorities are currently looking into the incident after they received calls about a fight around 8 pm.

Law enforcement officials visited the local tavern and conversed with several individuals, according to their statement. More investigations are underway to determine the events that transpired, but as of now, no one has lodged a complaint, nor has anyone been detained or charged. At this moment, there have been no charges or arrests made.

July 2024 – Conor McGregor sentenced for reckless driving

Two years ago in 2022, I found myself in a troubling situation when I was arrested for reckless driving in Ireland. My car was impounded, and since then, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the verdict. Finally, it has arrived! As reported by The Irish Mirror, Judge David McHugh at Blanchardstown District Court described my actions as an “appalling series of breaches of the road traffic rules” and a “dangerous driving episode.” This is indeed a lesson I will carry with me for a long time.

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: I was elated to hear that Conor McGregor received a five-month suspended sentence, on the condition that he maintains peace for two years. This comes with a fine of €5,000 ($5,400) and a two-year ban from driving. Remarkably, he managed to avoid jail time, as the judge found him “remorseful.” Despite not speaking in court, his presence was undeniably felt.
