This historical crime thriller stars Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Malachi Kirby, and vividly portrays 19th-century London’s East End with a level of detail rarely seen on screen.

I was totally hooked by A Thousand Blows from the very beginning! It’s based on the true story of two boxers and a gang leader just trying to survive in London back in the 1880s. It quickly became one of my favorite shows on Hulu, and honestly, season 2, which came out in 2026, is even more amazing. It really delivers!

A Thousand Blows Is One Of Hulu’s Best Crime Dramas

The series A Thousand Blows draws viewers into the gritty world of early bare-knuckle boxing in London’s East End, and is inspired by real people and events. While the main characters – Hezekiah Moscow, Henry “Sugar” Goodson, and Mary Carr – were actual historical figures, the show takes creative liberties with their stories to make it more compelling.

Though the show’s creator, Steven Knight, has explored similar crime dramas set in Britain before, the characters of Mary Carr and Hez Moscow feel remarkably fresh and original. Erin Doherty and Malachi Kirby deliver powerful, realistic performances as these complex individuals.

Hez, a Jamaican immigrant, experiences racism alongside his friend Alec Munroe. The series also features Carr, the compelling leader of the Forty Elephants – a notorious all-female gang that actually existed in London during the show’s historical setting. A Thousand Blows Brought Three Stars Of Netflix’s Adolescence Together

Beyond its own success, A Thousand Blows was key to assembling the cast of the popular Netflix drama Adolescence. Stephen Graham enjoyed working with Erin Doherty and Ashley Walters so much on that show that he brought them back for this major 2025 miniseries.

Graham and Walters had worked together previously, but A Thousand Blows marked the first time Graham really got to observe Doherty’s directing style. Also, Walters was planning to stop acting when Graham offered him the lead role in Adolescence, after they’d already collaborated on a crime series by Steven Knight.
