A “tense, suburban” thriller: Why this “gripping” new Manchester-set drama will be appointment TV

At the beginning of 2021, the show “It’s a Sin” struck a chord with people across the nation. Even though Channel 4 made it available as a complete series at once online, which led to it becoming their largest ever instant boxset in terms of streaming, its weekly broadcast remained the pinnacle of television events.

As TV viewing patterns evolve, water-cooler discussions about shows like Russell T Davies’ hits are becoming less frequent. However, his series were events that audiences from various generations wouldn’t miss. Now, with news of his upcoming Channel 4 drama, we anticipate a similar response.

What will Tip Toe be about?

The show, created by the same mind behind the critically praised “It’s a Sin” and revolutionary “Queer as Folk,” is an enthralling new drama focusing on the LGBTQ+ community. This series will be set against the vibrant landscape of Manchester’s Canal Street, a place that Davies has often referred to as his “second home.

The storyline details are still vague, but Channel 4 has disclosed that the main characters will consist of two neighbors. One is Leo, who manages a bar, and the other is Clive, a father to two adolescent boys, who works as an electrician.

As things seem to calm down, the world around them becomes increasingly volatile. Conversations turn hostile, perspectives harden, and eventually, two neighbors find themselves bitter enemies in a nerve-wracking suburban thriller that questions everything we believe about safety.

The five-part drama titled Tip Toe is being billed as an “intense yet captivating narrative…” or simply put, it’s an urgent and gripping story that’s sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The writer and producer Davies, who has collaborated with talents from his past projects, including Queer as Folk and It’s a Sin, has expressed: “I felt compelled to create this series because the world seems to be growing more peculiar, challenging, and ominous. In truth, the battle is underway.

Nicola Shindler from Quay Street Productions expressed her joy about collaborating with Russell again on Channel 4, and she’s thrilled to have the opportunity to share such a significant tale. Tip Toe isn’t just a topical drama, but an engaging story filled with Russell’s sharp wit, heartwarming charm, and poignant depth.

Peter Hoar, director of It’s a Sin, is also working on this new project.

Who will be in Tip Toe?

Despite the assurance that the upcoming series features a lively group of characters, no actors have yet been officially linked to the project.

The series “It’s a Sin” introduced several fresh and captivating talents such as Nathaniel Curtis, Omari Douglas, and Callum Scott Howells. Since then, they have all been involved in significant productions, with Nathaniel Curtis continuing his collaboration with Russell T Davies following the latter’s resumption as showrunner for “Doctor Who.
