A Survivor Contestant Graphically Explained The Two Options You Have For Pooping

You’ve probably wondered at some point while watching Survivor: what do contestants do when they need to use the bathroom? The show has hinted at the answer over the years, but a recent contestant finally shared the full, detailed story on social media.

Loveable castaway Sophi Balerdi has been all over social media since the season ended, partially because fans love interacting with her and partially because of a scandal we’ll get to later. During one of these fan interactions, she was asked about how players use the bathroom. More specifically, she was asked what players do when they take a dump. Thankfully, she had a graphic answer for a graphic question.

There are two ways players handle bathroom needs on the island. One is called ‘Coconut Grove’ – a designated spot chosen by the tribe at the start of the game. When someone needs to use the bathroom, they dig a hole in this area, relieve themselves, and then bury it. There’s no toilet paper, so players either use leaves or rinse off in the ocean. However, using Coconut Grove always comes with a lingering worry.

I’ve heard before that people have dug up other people’s poop, which is kind of disgusting.

Another possibility is to relieve yourself in the ocean – often called an ‘aquadump.’ It’s exactly what it sounds like: going into the water to do your business. The benefit is you don’t need toilet paper, as the ocean washes you clean. However, the ocean is very dangerous at night, making this option impractical for most players.

As a long-time fan, I remember when Survivor first started fifty seasons ago, it felt so different. Sure, someone always got voted out, but that felt like a result of everything else happening – the real meat of the show was watching people actually live at camp. We’d get long scenes of them fishing, building shelter, and just figuring out how to work together – or not! Now, it feels like so much of that is cut short in favor of competitions and players obsessing over making flashy moves. It’s less about the experience of survival and more about the strategy of the game, which is a shame, really.

The longer episodes do give us more glimpses into what life is like at camp, but often those scenes are just the contestants goofing off or sharing overly emotional stories about how a simple task – like building a fire or catching dinner – has helped them work through childhood issues. It’s rarely about the everyday disagreements you’d expect, like how long to cook rice or how to fix a leaky shelter.

Sophi B recently placed second on Survivor 49 and was a fan favorite, trailing only Savannah and Rizo, who are both returning for the exciting new season, Survivor 50. Many expected her to be asked back, and she’s been actively engaging with fans. However, she’s now facing accusations from fellow finalist Sage of having unfairly strategized before the game even began.

Before the season even began, two contestants were removed for breaking the rules by communicating beforehand. After building anticipation, Sage revealed that Sophi and Jake were among the four people she overheard talking before arriving on the island. Viewers have had mixed reactions to this information, with some finding it more significant than others.

I’ve been thinking about this, and honestly, I’m not that concerned with whether Sage was truthful or not. It seems everyone acknowledges there was a lot of pre-competition preparation, and those who went too far were penalized. I don’t fault anyone for trying to get ahead if others are doing it, and frankly, it doesn’t seem like a big deal when pre-competition prep happens every season.

I’m really hoping Sophi B comes back for another season, and when she does, I’m curious to hear everything that happened, even the messy stuff – like if she was ever kicked off the show.
