A Star Wars guide to toppling an Empire in three mov(i)es

How can we effectively resist an empire?

Friends! The Original Trilogy portrays a resilient Rebellion, victorious against the mighty and intimidating Empire despite its size. Luke stands bravely yet never fights alone; he’s surrounded by family, friends, and even strangers who all share his common goal. Similarly, it takes numerous individuals to build and maintain an Empire (despite Palpatine’s wishes otherwise). Conversely, breaking one requires the combined efforts of many people. However powerful a Sith Emperor might be, they cannot withstand a united populace.

The main issue, as depicted by Andor, lies in establishing unity among the rebels. From Cassian’s puzzled viewpoint, we witness a multitude of disunited rebellions that repeatedly falter. The primary reasons for these failures often stem from internal conflicts, suggesting a deep-rooted animosity among rebel members that may even surpass their hatred for the Empire. Additionally, betrayal within the group is another common cause of collapse, with one member frequently undermining the efforts of others. As such, the rebellions in Andor are largely ineffective due to their lack of cooperation and unity.

A crucial initial move against fascism is finding unity. Connect with friends and relatives who share your convictions, or collaborate with others experiencing oppression by forming or joining a group. Try to relinquish anger and curb egoistic tendencies; doing so will help attract possible allies instead of alienating them. Be cautious not to imitate the very system you’re striving to resist, even when it may seem unintentional.

As a passionate cinephile, I must say that “The Mask of Fear” presents an enthralling portrayal of the genesis of rebellion. Bail Organa’s unwavering idealism, Mon Mothma’s strategic pragmatism, and Saw Gerrera’s fearless audacity serve as the foundation for this movement.

Each of these key figures has allies by their side, but they’ve also faced crushing defeats that left them reeling. The petition from The Delegation of Two Thousand, aiming to curb Palpatine’s power-grabbing ways, sadly became another casualty in the struggle for liberty.

In a far-off corner of the galaxy, Saw had witnessed the Separatists fall, only to be replaced by the formidable Empire – a bitter pill to swallow indeed. Yet despite their initial setbacks, these rebels found the strength and resolve to regroup and prepare for the long, arduous journey ahead.

In the original Star Wars trilogy, despite the Rebel Alliance reaching its peak strength, it wasn’t a match for the Empire in direct combat. The Empire’s military might was superior in size and equipment to that of the Rebellion at its zenith. However, the attack in the Original Trilogy turned out to be part of a larger strategy, otherwise, the Rebels would have been defeated.

The Rebellion triumphs more through guile than brute force. They weren’t capable of confronting the Empire directly, but they could exploit its vulnerabilities. It was fortunate for them that Empires known for their firm grip often frown upon cunning or deceit, making it possible for them to be outsmarted and outmaneuvered instead.

Lando Calrissian and Mon Momtha disguise allegiance to the Empire while secretly diverting their resources towards the Rebellion. Han Solo and Chewie evade Imperial authorities by being swift, as they only face trouble when caught. For Obi Wan and Yoda, imparting knowledge about combating oppression to future generations becomes a lifelong mission.

But it’s better than living under an Empire.
