A Star Trek icon isn't likely to return to the franchise

As a long-time Star Trek fan, I must say I hold a special place in my heart for Colm Meaney and Miles O’Brien. The character development from a background character to a starring role on Deep Space Nine was nothing short of remarkable. However, after reading his recent interview, it seems that the time for O’Brien to return to space may have passed.

In recent times, Star Trek has experienced a revival by bringing back familiar faces and characters to the series. Actors like Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, and others have made appearances in the franchise once more, assuming their old roles for Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy, while also seeing numerous characters resurface in Strange New Worlds, Discovery, and other productions as well.

Although some have yet to return and may not wish to, it appears that Colm Meaney, who was previously a cast member on The Next Generation and later Deep Space Nine, has closed the door on any potential future appearances.

Initially appearing as a regular cast member in The Next Generation, Colm Meaney portrayed Miles O’Brien – initially a secondary figure with minor screen time – who eventually became a pivotal character on Deep Space Nine. Over the course of the series, O’Brien evolved from being a relatively unknown character to one of the most significant elements in Deep Space Nine.

It seems that his space journey has come to an end, based on a recent interview on the Comic Book Movie website.

“I think seven years in a space suit was enough, you know? I’m often asked that question and you never say never, of course, but first of all I wouldn’t fit in it anymore [Laughs] and…I remember people saying at the time when Voyager got going, ‘How many times can you go to the well? How many times can you revamp this?

…They successfully did it with Star Trek and they’re still doing it. Good luck to them. Do you want to see an elderly Miles O’Brien? I don’t know. It’s certainly not at the top of my agenda of things I’d like to do at the moment.”

71-year-old Meaney has been busy with a full career since Deep Space Nine concluded, and he continues to be in great demand. He shows no signs of reducing his workload and may even have room for Starfleet projects, but it appears he’s content without putting on the uniform again.

It seems rather illogical to long for someone who is happy with their past when there are so many others returning.
