A Star Trek icon confirms return to the franchise in the near future
As a gamer with a lifelong obsession with Star Trek, I can confidently say that the franchise has been a beacon of unity and shared experiences across generations. From The Next Generation to Nu Trek, it’s been a joy to witness the older generation passing their love for this universe onto the newcomers.
Star Trek offers a unique bonding experience across generations. Each fresh series or movie adds to its audience, not only via advertising, but also by creating common experiences. Often, the love for Star Trek is inherited from parents to children, or from seasoned fans to newcomers.
Over time, the franchise has prospered due to the common bond of exploring Star Trek together. This shared experience has energized and united the fanbase. However, it’s not only the fans who reap the rewards; the older generation also enriches the younger by passing on their appreciation for this series.
In essence, the creators behind our cherished shows and films follow a similar pattern. Starting with The Next Generation, the pioneer of Star Trek properties without William Shatner, there’s always been an underlying support system from the past generation to nurture the newcomers. This idea has been consistently carried forward into the modern age of Nu Trek.
Among the primary influencers in the evolution of Star Trek across generations is Jonathan Frakes. Initially known for his portrayal of Will Riker, Frakes has since moved into the realm of directing. He discovered a talent for this craft in the 1990s and has been consistently pursuing it ever since.
For close to four decades, he’s been associated with Star Trek, unlike some others such as Patrick Stewart or Kate Mulgrew who had extended absences. However, after completing Star Trek: Picard and his directorial commitments, it was announced that Frakes would temporarily step away from the Star Trek universe.
It wasn’t clear how long away he would be, but more recently, Frakes disclosed that he will rejoin Star Trek for Starfleet Academy, probably as the director of an episode. At a recent Star Trek convention in New Jersey (as reported by TrekMovie.com), Frakes along with Brent Spiner, confirmed his return to the series during a panel discussion.
I am going to go do the new Star Trek called Starfleet Academy. It’s starring Holly Hunter, Academy Award-winner, and Paul Giamatti. Featuring one of our family members, Robert Picardo. [Tatiana Maslany] I have her in my episode. She is fabulous. I think Mary Wiseman too… Oded Fehr, who I love.
Re-introducing him to the franchise could aid Starfleet Academy in striking the perfect balance for the show, a feat they’ve been more successful at since the launch of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. With Frakes on board, a fresh cast and team can gain insight into the magic that is Star Trek.
