A Star Trek film, Planet of the Titans, would have gone back to the dawn of time
Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, and Dr. Leonard are all fictional characters from the original series that were used to teach people about fire. That’s why the concept of a different type of Trek is so important for us to understand. The original series was created to teach mankind about fire. That’s why it’s a different type of Trek.
Picture it: Travel back in time. Here we have Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley), along with their fellow crew members from Star Trek: The Original Series, returning to Earth’s distant past to assist our earliest human ancestors. This almost became a reality following the skyrocketing syndicated ratings of Star Trek
Absolutely, Paramount was keen to explore potential profits from the series, so they brainstormed ideas for an extension. They contemplated another animated show, a television movie, or even a new live-action series, but found it challenging to settle on a specific approach. In the end, they concluded that a theatrical film would be most effective, and thus, the creative process started. [Paraphrased from Den of Geek]
Star Trek: Planet of the Titans would transport The Original Series crew to a period in human history before fire was invented. This scenario, while intriguing, would pose challenges as per the Prime Directive, which prohibits interference with the natural development of planets and their inhabitants. However, there would inevitably come a point in the movie where fire would be necessary, leaving Captain Kirk no other option but to facilitate it
I was truly disappointed when the film never moved beyond development, but luckily, we got some amazing concept art from Ralph McQuarrie – specifically an updated Enterprise design, which didn’t see the light of day in that particular movie, but it graced us in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. If you haven’t seen them yet, check out ForgottenTrek.com. This fresh take on Star Trek certainly felt different, and who knows? Maybe one day this concept could materialize in a future Star Trek series or film
