Keira Knightley stars in the new Netflix mystery thriller, *The Woman in Cabin 10*, which is based on the popular novel by Ruth Ware. If you enjoyed her previous Netflix film, *Black Doves*, you might be looking forward to this one—and who doesn’t love a good mystery? However, it’s best to go in with realistic expectations.
The film follows journalist Laura Blacklock (Knightley) as she seeks a less stressful assignment after a difficult experience with a previous story. She accepts an invitation to cover a charity event on a luxurious yacht, joining a group of wealthy individuals. It seems like a perfect opportunity… but things quickly start to unravel.
It turns out there’s quite a bit going on. Laura sees someone thrown overboard, but is told everyone is safe and accounted for. She’s left wondering if she actually witnessed a murder, or if it’s a result of her past trauma. Ultimately, by the end of *The Woman in Cabin 10*, the real question is whether the mystery still holds your interest.
What to Read Next
As a reader, I think this type of story really works when you’re kept guessing about whether the main character is being honest. That’s where *The Woman in Cabin 10* fell a little flat for me – it was pretty clear Laura *was* telling the truth, and the issue was just that everyone else on the ship was a terrible, disbelieving rich person. It took away some of the mystery!
The movie doesn’t build much suspense, and there’s not a lot of depth to explore, even with the central mystery of who fell overboard. While it initially piques your interest, instead of adding layers of intrigue, the solution is revealed surprisingly early – with a whole hour of the film still remaining.

One good thing about the movie is its twist – it’s truly surprising if you haven’t read the book. It’s the only time the film gets ahead of the audience, challenging your expectations and grabbing your attention, even if you weren’t fully focused before.
A truly great movie would have allowed that moment to linger, letting the audience puzzle over its meaning. However, *The Woman in Cabin 10* quickly explains everything, and then spends the rest of the film revealing how unsatisfying the explanation actually is.
The movie finally gets more enjoyable when it embraces silliness, though you have to go with it. The first hour is pretty bleak and doesn’t really use the talented cast well, with the exception of some fun appearances by Kaya Scodelario and Paul Kaye.

If you’re looking for something easy to watch on a weekend, *The Woman in Cabin 10* might be a good choice. It’s the kind of movie with well-known actors and a simple plot – perfect for relaxing without needing to pay close attention. At just 90 minutes, it’s a good length for casual viewing.
Instead of being a thrilling and captivating read, *The Woman in Cabin 10* unfortunately doesn’t grab your attention and is easy to stop reading.

The Woman in Cabin 10 is available to watch now on Netflix.
