The British streaming service, Prime Video, has recently included the comfort film “Quartet,” featuring Sheridan Smith, in its collection for viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Starting from this past weekend, subscribers on Prime Video have gained access to a heartwarming movie from 2012 that features Smith alongside the late, esteemed actors Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon for streaming enjoyment.
The stage play “Quartet,” originally from the West End and written by Ronald Harwood, was the first film directing effort for Dustin Hoffman.
The movie chronicles the lives of people dwelling at Beecham House, a retirement sanctuary for past virtuosos and vocalists from the operatic world.
In an effort to prevent Beecham from shutting down due to financial difficulties, opera singers Reg (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly), and Cissy (Pauline Collins) join forces once more to stage a concert celebrating the birthday of composer Giuseppe Verdi. Their ultimate goal is to raise enough funds to preserve their cherished home.

As a gamer, I step into the shoes of Cedric Livingstone, the director, in this captivating tale. The quartet is rounded out by Jean Horton, a once-renowned soprano sung by Sheridan Smith, who swore off singing after parting ways with Reg. To add to the drama, she’s also Reg’s former spouse. In this production, Sheridan also plays Dr. Lucy Cogan, the dedicated doctor at our story’s heart.
When the movie was first shown, Digital Spy referred to Quartet as a warm, soothing film, highlighting exceptional performances, especially from Maggie Smith who skillfully employed her distinctive piercing gaze towards Jean, and Connolly’s character Wilf.
Discussing the film production, Sheridan Smith shared with Digital Spy that the set had a very spontaneous and enchanting atmosphere. During breaks from filming, the actors would often play music together.
This version maintains the original meaning but uses more common, everyday language to make it easier for readers to understand.

“When we weren’t filming, they’d all start jamming and Dustin would get on the piano,” she said.
As a devoted admirer, I must say, the ambiance on the set was simply enchanting, creating numerous authentic moments and hearty chuckles that made it into the final film. The whole experience felt incredibly organic and magical, as if time itself had frozen. Remarkably, he managed to preserve this genuine charm within the movie itself.
Quartet is available to stream on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland.
