A perfect “gritty” new detective drama: 6 shows not to miss this week across BBC, Netflix and more

January 2026 looks like it’s going to be a fantastic month for TV! It starts strong on New Year’s Day with the return of popular shows like The Night Manager, the new thriller Red Eye, and another season of The Traitors (which kicks off with a big surprise). The week starting January 5th promises even more great viewing, including brand new dramas and the return of some beloved British series. Lynley

The new adaptation everyone’s been waiting for arrives on BBC this week, with the first episode airing Monday night. Early reviews are fantastic, giving it a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are calling it both realistic and heartwarming, and one review from Collider says it lives up to the standard of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Lady Geeks Media describes it as “gritty and honest, yet surprisingly tender and cozy.”

This new series updates the beloved Inspector Lynley mysteries, inspired by Elizabeth George’s bestselling novels. It follows the dynamic detective partnership of DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers as they relentlessly pursue justice.

Grantchester

The tenth season of the popular ITV drama is back, with Robson Green and Rishi Nair returning as DI Geordie Keating and Reverend Alphy Kottaram, respectively.

When Grantchester returns, Keating and Kottaram will once again team up to investigate crimes. The new season will also explore how they help each other navigate personal challenges and hidden secrets in their own lives.

Grantchester series 10 will premiere on Wednesday 7 January on ITV at 9pm.

Patience

Ella Maisy Purvis is back as Patience Evans, a clever investigator who assists the police with cases. Previously, she worked as a clerk in the York police department. In the second season, Patience will be working under a new boss, Detective Frankie Monroe, played by Jessica Hynes.

We’re told that as the team tackles a lot of new cases, viewers can expect even more complex and puzzling mysteries unfolding in amazing locations.

Patience season 2 airs on Wednesday 7 January at 9pm on Channel 4.


Call the Midwife

After the recent Christmas specials, a new season of Call the Midwife begins this Sunday.

The upcoming episodes will explore topics like the Women’s Liberation Movement, as well as the medical conditions placenta previa and tuberculosis.

Call the Midwife season 15 starts on Sunday 11 January at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

His and Hers

This suspenseful crime drama stars Tessa Thompson (known from Hedda) and Jon Bernthal (The Bear). It’s a classic mystery where both main characters – reporter Anna (Thompson) and Detective Jack Harper (Bernthal) – begin to suspect each other of wrongdoing.

His and Hers arrives to Netflix on Thursday 8 January.

A Thousand Blows, season 2

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, returns with a new season of his period drama, a year after its debut. This season is set in the gritty world of Victorian London’s bare-knuckle boxing scene and features performances by Stephen Graham, Malachi Kirby, and Erin Doherty.

Premiering on 9 January on Disney+
