A new World of Warcraft animatic shows big bad Xal’atath making friends

As a seasoned adventurer who has traversed the vast landscapes of Azeroth since its humble beginnings, I can’t help but feel a tingle of excitement down my spine as World of Warcraft‘s next expansion, The War Within, looms on the horizon. The intricate lore and rich history that Blizzard has woven into this game never fails to captivate me, and the latest animation focusing on the Nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet is no exception.

The upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, titled “The War Within“, is quickly approaching. In anticipation of the start of the Worldsoul Saga, Blizzard recently unveiled a new animated short centered around the Nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet. These arachnid inhabitants are currently facing hardships, but it seems there’s a benefactor on the scene to lend a helping hand. I can hardly imagine anything going awry!

In the world of Legion, I first encountered Xal’atath – she was trapped within a blade, serving as the Artifact weapon for Shadow Priests like myself. Later on, we managed to free this enigmatic entity from her prison, and ever since, she’s been nothing but trouble. This animation depicts her extending an offer of power to the Queen of Azj’Kahet, tempting her with a path back to greatness. The Queen seems hesitant about the proposition, but her daughter is intrigued and ready to strike a deal. With a single assassination, Xal’atath secures her new ally.

In this tale, we embark on the initial assault of “The War Within”; we delve profoundly into the territories of the Nerubian realms, aiming to invade the den of this recently coronated Queen. Yet, it appears that Blizzard is preparing Xal’atath as a recurring antagonist. It has been revealed that “The War Within” marks the beginning of a three-part narrative revolving around Azeroth’s Worldsoul. Although Xal’atath isn’t an Old God, she seems to be allied with The Void and the Black Empire in some capacity. At present, she dwells within the remains of a deceased elf, causing chaos that will undoubtedly ripple and escalate into “Midnight” and “The Last Titan”.

For players who are afraid of spiders (arachnophobia), Blizzard is introducing an accessibility option that transforms in-game spiders into crabs. This adjustment won’t impact cinematics, but it aims to provide a less frightening experience for these players as they explore Azj’Kahet without undue anxiety.

The War Within is set to release on August 26 on PC.
