A New ‘Walking Dead’ Crossover Show Is Finally Happening

After some encouraging news, it looks like a massive crossover event – similar to the Avengers movies – could finally be happening within The Walking Dead universe. The original series, which lasted 11 seasons and was based on Robert Kirkman’s comics, expanded into two spin-offs, Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond. With the main show now finished, its key characters have branched out into even more new series, including The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, and Dead City.

According to entertainment reporter Daniel Richtman, AMC is currently developing a series that would bring together characters from the various The Walking Dead spin-off shows. This is the first news about a possible crossover event in the Walking Dead universe, although a producer for the franchise hinted at something similar last year.

Scott M. Gimple, the chief content officer for The Walking Dead, has said he wants to eventually bring all the different shows in the franchise together in one big crossover event. He’s even hinted that he’s been subtly planting clues about this future event throughout the series.

I’ve definitely thought about a big crossover event like the one in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and I’ve been subtly hinting at it in the shows. However, there’s no telling when or how it might actually happen. There are a lot of factors to consider, and things could easily change along the way, but I am setting things up so it’s possible.

Scott Gimple hinted at a potential annual, limited series—around 16 hours of content—while also dismissing the possibility of new Walking Dead movies. This raises the question of whether this event, similar to the Avengers films, could be expanded into a full season, essentially bringing back the original Walking Dead show for a twelfth season.

When Will The Walking Dead’s Crossover Show Actually Happen?

Currently, only two spin-offs of The Walking Dead are actively being produced: Daryl Dixon, filmed in France, and Dead City, which takes place in New York. Daryl Dixon, starring Norman Reedus, is filming its last season and will be released next year. Dead City, focusing on Maggie and Negan, has been renewed for a third season and will begin filming soon.

The future of the most popular spin-off, The Ones Who Live, starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne, is uncertain. Scott M. Gimple recently stated that the original intention was to create a short, limited series, but hinted that these characters might reappear in other projects.

Fans are guessing that Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier’s current adventure in Europe will eventually lead them back to the United States. They might end up back in the Commonwealth, which is still led by King Ezekiel. Actor Khary Payton has hinted that there are definitely more stories planned for the characters.

It seems the big crossover event featuring characters from all over the country in The Walking Dead universe won’t happen until after Dead City finishes airing. Once that spin-off is done, there won’t be any more spin-offs running – unless a new one gets approved quickly. That would then clear the way for the crossover to finally begin, probably sometime in 2028 or later.
