A newly released Swedish true crime drama has become a hit on Netflix in the UK.
As an avid viewer, I can tell you that The Breakthrough is inspired by a chilling true event – a double murder that occurred in Linköping, Sweden back in 2004. This crime ignited the nation’s second-largest investigation to date, which remained unsolved for an astonishing 16 years until groundbreaking genealogical research finally cracked the case.
The four-part series is labeled as a “story created imaginatively” that draws inspiration from Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund’s 2021 factual book titled “The Breakthrough: How The Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping“.
Since its debut on January 7, the show has climbed to the fifth spot on Netflix UK’s most-watched list. It’s currently trailing behind popular titles such as Squid Game and Missing You, but is ahead of Black Doves and Virgin River.
Originally introduced in 2022, “The Breakthrough” features Peter Eggers and Mattias Nordkvist in pivotal roles as a detective and genealogist. The series was written by Oskar Söderlund.
In 2004, a double homicide in Linköping, Sweden remained unsolved for 16 years. However, a groundbreaking discovery was made recently, with a genealogist being the one to crack the case – marking the first time such a murder has been solved through genealogical research in Europe.
The Breakthrough tells a tale of an unforeseen hero, an unusual alliance, and the pursuit of a murderer. However, it is more than just that; it delves into how an unsolved crime permeates through a community and the consequences for those left without resolution to the ‘Who’ and ‘Why.’
Previously discussing the project, writer Söderlund mentioned that reading the book “The Breakthrough” left him with a deep impression of the powerful personal fates intertwined within this extensive murder probe.
Determined police personnel, curious family members seeking clarification, and ultimately, the diligent genealogist who eventually found the answer.
The events that struck Linköping have left a deep scar on its people and city, and I wish to share with you the efforts being made to heal from this distress. Amidst this heart-wrenching situation, there are individuals who persist, battling to find closure, their lives forever etched by the past events.
