A new streaming platform featuring hard-to-find movies is launching soon. Letterboxd, a website for discussing films, started in 2013 and became incredibly popular during the pandemic. It’s now a go-to resource for movie lovers, with 24 million members around the world who use it to share, rate, and review films.
Letterboxd is launching its online movie rental service, the Letterboxd Video Store, on December 10th – just two days from now! It will be available in 23 countries and will initially offer nine movies, organized into two collections. The service will operate on a pay-per-view basis and will include some films you won’t be able to find anywhere else.
Letterboxd explains they’re using data from user watchlists, reviews, and activity to choose movies for their Video Store. They’re focusing on films people actually want to rent, while also making sure to include some hidden gems. Letterboxd plans to add even more titles to the store before the year ends.
Movie selection and rental costs will differ depending on where you are. You’ll be able to watch movies from Video Store on a variety of devices, including TVs (using Apple TV 4K, Chromecast, and AirPlay), computers, iPhones, and Android phones. They also plan to add apps for more smart TVs. According to Letterboxd’s CEO and co-founder, Matthew Buchanan,
We’re really proud of Letterboxd and everything our community has created. We listen to what they want, and that’s been key to our success. They show us what’s popular – like a classic 80s action movie suddenly gaining attention, or people still discovering films from festivals that happened years ago.
Video Store responds to what people actually want to watch. We help distributors find new audiences for older films and give filmmakers a direct connection to their fans. Ultimately, we want to work with the industry to make sure films reach the viewers who are most excited to see them.
The shelves and movies set to be initially available via the Letterboxd Video Store are:

For about ten years, we’ve been able to rent or buy movies digitally, and streaming services have become incredibly popular – all competing for viewers. While platforms like Letterboxd are vying for attention alongside huge studios (with Netflix even considering buying Warner Bros.), Letterboxd is different. It focuses on supporting and showcasing independent and less mainstream films.
