A New ‘Judge Dredd’ Movie Is In the Works From Taika Watiti

Taika Waititi is to direct a new Judge Dredd movie.

The director of Thor: Ragnarok has been selected to take charge of a fresh project centered around the well-known British comic book hero.

Drew Pearce, known for creating action flicks like The Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, will be responsible for penning the screenplay.

According to sources close to the matter, Waititi and Pearce, two individuals who share a common bond of having grown up with these books, have been eagerly seeking a joint venture for quite some time now. They’ve been friends, and their shared affection for these stories has fueled their desire to work together on a project for several years.

2000 AD, a popular British weekly comics anthology, saw the emergence of Judge Dredd in the late 1970s. This iconic character was brought to life by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I find myself immersed in the gritty world of Mega-City One’s future metropolis, where I assume the role of a law enforcer, judge, jury, and executioner – all rolled into one. The character Dredd, a staple in numerous comic strips, video games, board games, books, and even U.K. postage stamps, has proven to be an undeniable fan favorite.

1995 saw a big-screen adaptation of Dredd, starring action icon Sylvester Stallone as the lead character. However, this movie received mostly negative reviews from critics.

In 2012, the character made a comeback on the silver screen, appearing in a movie that was warmly appreciated by audiences, featuring Karl Urban as the lead actor and with a screenplay penned by Alex Garland, who is well-known for writing “28 Days Later”.

The specifics of the plot remain undisclosed, however, there’s a strong suspicion that it will draw more from the original comic books than prior film interpretations. It seems to emphasize intricate world-building and dark comedy instead.

The movie is expected to be an entertaining sci-fi hit, kickstarting a potential Dredd universe, which may grow to include additional films and series across multiple platforms.

waititi directed two films within the Thor series, yet expressed no desire to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He agreed to the project out of financial necessity.

In an interview for the Smartless podcast, the 49-year-old director shared that he initially held no desire to work on such films. It wasn’t part of his professional aspirations as an auteur. However, finding himself in financial straits with a second child to feed, he decided this project could provide a timely solution to his family’s needs.

Waititi remarked: “To be honest, wasn’t the most beloved franchise. As a child, I never found myself drawn to the comics. Whenever I picked one up, my reaction was usually ‘Yuck.’ After doing some research and reading a few pages of it, I gained a better understanding.

Taika got the impression that Marvel’s contacting him indicated a sense of uncertainty on their part regarding how to proceed with Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of the God of Thunder.

In the words of the director of “Jojo Rabbit”, he shared: “It seemed like there was nowhere else to take it. In my mind, I pondered, ‘This must be the absolute rock-bottom point, they’ve asked me to work on this.’
