A new Barbie movie is coming – but it’s not the one you want
A fresh Barbie movie is coming soon, but unlike the live-action version featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, this isn’t a continuation of that storyline.
According to Deadline, the legendary toy series is set to return, with Mattel Studios reportedly teaming up with Illumination (the creators of Despicable Me) and Universal Pictures to produce an all-new animated movie.
While specifics about the project remain limited, there have been announcements that the as-yet-unnamed movie is set for release in theaters, marking an unprecedented debut for an animated film within the franchise on the silver screen.
What to Read Next
As of now, an animation spinoff is being proposed but not yet definitively planned. Officially, a sequel to the 2023 live-action movie hasn’t been confirmed yet. The main cast members, including Robbie, Gosling, director Greta Gerwig, and co-writer Noah Baumbach, have all agreed to work on just one film for now.
As a gamer, I (Greta Gerwig) confessed in the scorching heat of July 2023 that my creative wellspring has yet to birth any captivating ideas for a potential sequel. I candidly admitted, “In this very instant, it’s all I’ve got.
After watching a movie, it seems as though all my creative ideas are exhausted and every ambition I’ve had is fulfilled. I wouldn’t wish to stifle anyone else’s aspirations, but right now, I find myself completely devoid of inspiration or motivation.
In an interview with TIME, Robbie, who was involved as a producer in the film, expressed hesitation about a sequel by saying, “It can be risky to establish the first film while already thinking about sequels.
Although Gerwig and Robbie mentioned that they weren’t actively planning for a sequel, Mattel’s CEO and chairman, Ynon Kreiz, stated during the same interview that the company aims to establish a franchise based on the toy line.
He stated, “Our aim is to produce films that transcend ordinary screenings and transform into significant cultural phenomena.” If we manage to spark the interest of talented directors such as Greta and Noah, providing them with ample creative space, we can truly make a difference.
The animated Barbie film has no release date.
