A new age of horror: 6 rising stars in the horror genre

I’ve been absolutely fascinated by the journeys of these exceptional horror genre actors. Their unique contributions to the genre have left a lasting impression on me as a fan.

It’s thrilling for horror enthusiasts to witness familiar faces from past horror films reappear in new ones. Though Jenna Ortega and Mia Goth currently dominate the scene as modern-day scream queens, emerging talents are now making their mark as horror actors to watch.

Giancarlo Esposito

Esposito has made a name for himself in the industry over the years, but more recently, he’s gained recognition in the horror genre. You might recall the role where he portrayed the leader of a criminal gang; unexpectedly, his character was unveiled as a vampire (vintage spoiler alert >!spoiler: Esposito’s character turned out to be a vampire!<).

I’ve always appreciated Esposito’s serious acting chops, but there’s something delightfully different about his performance in “MaXXXine” within the horror genre. He transformed into an outrageous parody of ’80s Hollywood talent agents, and trust me, it was one of my favorite roles he’s ever played (next to Maxine herself). Unfortunately, it seems there are no upcoming horror projects with him attached, so here’s hoping we get to see more of his unique flair for the genre soon.

Kathryn Newton

I’ve been impressed by Newton’s versatility in the horror genre, reaching a peak with her role in the horror comedy “Freaky.” In this film, she brilliantly portrayed both the part of an ordinary high school girl and a psychotic killer who had taken over her body.

After a short time, she appeared in “Lisa Frankenstein,” another horror comedy that put a new spin on an old film. It seems she understood our craving for more as “Abigail” followed quickly, with her portraying the hacker character in the criminal gang. Upcoming is a horror movie named “DreamQuil.” Details are scarce, but production is ongoing and the story revolves around a disturbing wellness retreat.

Dan Stevens

As a film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve had the privilege of watching countless movies and analyzing some truly remarkable performances. And let me tell you, the cast of “Abigail” was nothing short of exceptional. Among them, Stevens stood out as one of the most intriguing characters – a plot-crucial criminal whose complexity left a lasting impression on me. It’s hard to believe that this is the last actor from that film on my list; it’s been an absolute pleasure dissecting and appreciating their artistry.

After Lambert, played by Giancarlo Esposito, discloses his intentions, Stevens’ character transforms into a vampire and aims to seize control entirely. This leads to an intense showdown between Stevens and Abigail, as well as the final survivor, in the coming months. In August, audiences can catch Stevens in “Cuckoo” alongside Hunter Schafer. This film follows a teenage girl and her father as they relocate to the German Alps, where bizarre, inexplicable occurrences take place.

As a dedicated gamer and horror film enthusiast, I can tell you that watching two thrilling horror movies in a row from the up-and-coming director Stevens has left me feeling both exhilarated and slightly unnerved. Yet, it seems that there’s no rest for the wicked, as another horror movie featuring Stevens and acting legend Al Pacino is just around the corner. The tantalizingly titled The Ritual, set to drop next year, follows two priests with contrasting beliefs on faith as they attempt a harrowing rescue mission for a possessed woman.

Sophie Thatcher

Thatcher is most famously recognized for her acting role in “Yellowjackets,” a chilling TV show about a high school soccer team dealing with harrowing experiences. More recently, you might have seen Thatcher in “The Boogeyman,” an engaging horror film that I hadn’t remembered until I checked the images.

Thatcher portrayed a troubled teenager in “MaXXXine” haunted by a malignant entity that lurked in the shadows. In her minor role as a special effects artist, she applied a prosthetic mask to Maxine’s head prior to abandoning her, leading to Maxine’s inevitable fear. In November, audiences can look forward to Thatcher’s appearance in “Heretic,” a horror-thriller where she plays the part of two young religious women who are drawn into the residence of an unusually bizarre man (Hugh Grant).

David Dastmalchian

A new age of horror: 6 rising stars in the horror genre

I’ve known Dastmalchian since his days on FX’s “Gotham,” and it’s been a joy to see him shine in my preferred film genre. In “The Boogeyman,” he delivered a compelling performance as a troubled man who paid a fateful visit to the protagonist (Sophie Thatcher), ultimately taking his own life.

I was deeply impressed by Dastmalchian’s role in “Late Night with the Devil,” a movie that truly shined for me thanks to his captivating performance. In this production, he brings to life a troubled late-night host striving to outdo the competition during a live Halloween night broadcast. The anticipation for more remarkable work from Dastmalchian is palpable.

At present, “Dust Bunny,” a production by Bryan Fuller, the mastermind behind the successful show “Hannibal,” is undergoing post-production. In the upcoming month, Fuller will be featured in “AfrAId.” Following that, in September, he will unveil his supernatural horror project, titled “Rosario.” I’m excited for “Dust Bunny” and intrigued by “Rosario,” but I have some reservations about “AfrAId”; the AI theme seems to be losing its novelty.

Georgina Campbell

Campbell will be recalled as the leading actor in “Barbarian,” a film that left us all with a jolt midway through and added a slight tinge of unease towards Airbnb rentals. Subsequently, Campbell’s connection to horror productions has intensified further.

In a new Netflix production titled “Bird Box: Barcelona“, she took on a leading role, expanding the storyline of “Bird Box” with fresh twists to the mythology. Additionally, she appeared in the film “Lovely, Dark, and Deep“, portraying a lone ranger in the wilderness trying to unravel the mystery behind a past catastrophe. Following this, she featured in the horror movie “T.I.M.” about an artificial intelligence, and more recently, she joined the cast of “The Watchers“, a fantasy horror series where a group of individuals are being hunted by unidentified creatures.

At present, she’s working on a fresh slasher film titled “Psycho Killer” in which she portrays a law enforcement officer pursuing a ruthless murderer.
