A “mesmerising” British psychological thriller that “will keep you guessing” has just landed on Netflix

The captivating psychological thriller, titled “The Lesson“, featuring Richard E Grant and Daryl McCormack, has now arrived on Netflix.

2023’s movie focuses on Liam Sommers, a driven young author portrayed by McCormack, who seizes an opportunity to tutor at the manor of his literary idol, acclaimed writer JM Sinclair (Grant). Believing he has found the ideal stepping stone for his career, Liam eagerly embarks on this journey.

As Liam delves deeper, it becomes apparent that he’s found himself tangled in a complex tapestry of “family mysteries, grudges,” and “consequences,” with the roles of “mentor” and “student” becoming increasingly indistinct in a narrative filled with themes of “aspiration” and “deceit.

The Lesson,” penned by Alex MacKeith and helmed by Alice Troughton, featuring Julie Delpy and Stephen McMillan in secondary roles, is now accessible for streaming in the UK and Ireland on Netflix following its addition to their service.

Although it didn’t earn much at the box office, The Lesson has been praised by critics. As of now, this psychological thriller boasts a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 101 reviews.

The critical consensus stated, “Though it may not be as smart as it appears, the exceptional acting by a remarkably skilled ensemble makes The Lesson a valuable lesson to learn.” Meanwhile, Awards Daily described it as “meticulously crafted” and “captivating”.

According to MovieWeb, “The Lesson” is filled with tangible tension and an unsettling feeling of impending danger. Remarkable acting by a well-regarded ensemble complements an outstanding soundtrack, leaving viewers constantly on edge, trying to predict the story’s outcome.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this:

I was thrilled to hear the positive feedback from Screen Daily and The Spectator! Screen Daily found the movie to be both “watchable” and “polished”, which made me even more excited to watch it. On top of that, The Spectator showered Grant with high praise for his “deliciously, marvellously, full-on monstrous” performance. I can’t wait to see how he brings such a captivating character to life on the screen!

Empire Magazine describes McCormack, Grant, and Delpy as gracefully dancing in this sophisticated yet predictable slow-burn thriller. It is most enjoyable with a full glass of red wine and a playful attitude, while The Observer labels it as having an appealing atmosphere.

Next month, Netflix is set to remove a classic horror-comedy starring Christian Bale, specifically the critically-acclaimed “American Psycho,” from its streaming library on August 9th.

The Lesson is streaming now on Netflix.
