A Look Back at Taylor Swift’s Record-Breaking Eras Tour

As a fan who has followed Taylor Swift’s career since her debut album, I must say that the Eras Tour has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, seeing how she’s grown as an artist and a person over the years, and this tour encapsulates every aspect of her life’s work.

After over 630 days since the launch of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, this worldwide concert sensation will draw to a close after holding its last three performances in Vancouver, British Columbia, this coming weekend.

By the close of its 66-show run in 2023, Taylor Swift’s intricately designed musical spectacular accumulated over $1 billion, setting a record as the highest-earning concert tour ever. Since then, she has added another 86 shows to her repertoire, significantly boosting that total – and making Taylor Swift the first artist to amass a billion dollars from songwriting and live performances alone.

Over the past two years since Eras started, Swift has achieved a great deal. She’s released three albums, been chosen as TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year, produced the highest-grossing concert film ever made, and shattered numerous records along the way. Her fame shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Despite the emotional atmosphere for both fans and Taylor Swift herself, who appeared teary-eyed at her last Toronto concert on November 23, she expressed a poignant sentiment by saying, “I’m having quite an emotional moment.” She continued, acknowledging her band, crew, and fellow artists, “We have all invested a significant part of our lives into this. And you, the audience, have invested your lives into being with us tonight, and in giving us a memory we will cherish forever.

It’s clear that no other concert tour is similar to Eras. As a tribute to the last three performances, let’s examine the most significant two years in Taylor Swift’s career so far using numbers.

Number of Eras shows and cities

By December 8th, Swift’s tour will have seen her perform a total of 152 shows across five continents in 51 cities worldwide. Out of these performances, 62 took place within the United States, spanning 23 different cities. The rest of the shows (90) were part of the tour legs in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Canada.

Distance traveled by Eras attendees

On average, fans journeyed approximately 338 miles to attend the Eras Tour, as reported by Vivid Seats, a ticket exchange and resale company. This represents a 125% jump from the average of 150 miles traveled for her Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, and an astonishing 248% increase over the average of 97 miles they traveled during Taylor Swift’s inaugural headlining tour, the Fearless Tour, which spanned from 2009 to 2010.

Number of surprise songs

During my concerts throughout 2023 and beyond, I’ve added a unique twist by performing unannounced acoustic versions of over 160 songs from my repertoire. These “surprise songs” are not included in the original set list of more than 40 tunes, and I’ve made it a point to keep them fresh by only repeating a surprise song if I messed up the first time or it comes from my 2022 album, Midnights, which I consider the most authentic reflection of my life so far. However, at my last show in São Paulo, Brazil, I decided to mix things up and make all my tracks eligible for repeat performances when the tour resumed in the new year. In 2024, with a clean slate, I’ve continued to surprise my fans by introducing even more unique mashups of multiple songs as surprise offerings, totaling at least 299 by the final three shows of the tour in Vancouver.

Number of special guests

Over the course of her “Eras” tours, Taylor Swift has showcased a total of 19 opening acts, ranging from Sabrina Carpenter and Paramore to Gracie Abrams. Furthermore, she’s invited an additional 10 special guests on stage at different performances, including frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce, among others.

Number of Eras tickets sold

In December 2023, a concert trade publication called Pollstar estimated that Taylor Swift had sold approximately 4.35 million tickets during her tour between November 2022 and November 2023, which equates to an average of about 72,500 tickets per show. Each ticket cost an average of $238.95. By applying these figures to the shows she’s played since then, it’s likely that Swift has sold a total of around 11.02 million tickets. However, it’s important to note that these numbers are estimates, as Taylor Swift and her team have not released any official box-office numbers for her Eras tour.

Total Eras Tour gross

From Pollstar’s initial calculation of approximately $17.32 million per date for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, the total revenue could be about $2.633 billion so far. This figure is much greater than Pollstar’s original “astronomical” prediction of $2.165 billion and surpasses the projected GDP of 23 small countries in 2024. For reference, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which grossed the second-highest amount among all tours, sold six million tickets across 328 shows to earn $939 million.

Total Eras merch revenue

Based on various sources, Pollstar estimates that attendees at the initial 60 shows of “Eras” spent around $40 per person on merchandise. This suggests a potential tour merchandise revenue of approximately $440.8 million for Taylor Swift, excluding sales made on non-concert days. Furthermore, this figure is projected to increase after her final run of “Eras” dates in 2024.

The TTPD effect

In April 2024, Taylor Swift unveiled a new 31-track double album titled “The Tortured Poets Department” (TTPD) during the Eras Tour’s 2023 run. This album, which set a record by occupying every top 14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, sold an impressive 2.61 million equivalent album units in its first week and boasted 891.37 million official streams, making it the album with the largest streaming week ever, as reported by Luminate. This album marked Swift’s 14th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, equaling Jay-Z’s record for the most No. 1 albums by a solo artist. The Beatles, with 19, remain the only act to have more. After its release, Swift introduced seven new songs from “TTPD” into her Eras Tour setlist, which she referred to as “Female Rage: The Musical.

The Eras Tour Book sales

As the final weekend of Eras approached, Taylor Swift unveiled a coffee table book with more than 500 photos and stories from her record-breaking tour. Remarkably, this book, titled “Eras Tour Book“, was exclusively available through Target. In just two days following its release, it sold an impressive 814,000 copies, as per data provided by Circana BookScan. This sales figure ranks second only to Barack Obama’s “A Promised Land“, which sold 816,000 copies in its debut week back in 2020, making it the highest nonfiction sale since BookScan began tracking sales in 2001.
