Halle Berry is ready to say ‘I do’ once again.
Catwoman, age 59, revealed on Thursday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she’s engaged to her boyfriend, Grammy winner Van Hunt, 55.
The Academy Award-winning actress and her musician boyfriend of five years revealed her one-of-a-kind engagement ring, but haven’t announced a wedding date yet.
This will be her fourth wedding, following several very public and painful relationships. Those relationships resulted in two difficult fights over the care of her children.
I’ve always been fascinated by her love life! She’s dated – and even married – some seriously gorgeous and famous men, from actors to athletes and models. It’s quite a list of heartthrobs!
With the mother of two getting ready to remarry, the Daily Mail is revisiting her past relationships and famous former partners.
Olivier Martinez (2013 – 2016)
Halle Berry’s marriage to Olivier Martinez, 60, started as a beautiful love story, but eventually ended in a difficult and public fight over their son.
While filming the movie Dark Tide in South Africa in 2010, Halle Berry met Jean Reno, who is sometimes called the ‘French Brad Pitt’.
The two wed in 2013 — the same year they welcomed their son Maceo Robert, 12 — and split in 2016.
As many of you know, navigating life transitions can be really tough, and sometimes that means big changes in family dynamics. I learned that Halle and her ex finalized their divorce last year, in 2023. They’ve agreed on a joint custody arrangement for their children, and Halle will be providing financial support to help with their upbringing. It’s a testament to both of them prioritizing their kids even through a difficult time.
In 2024, Berry took legal action against the actor, alleging he was attempting to avoid their required co-parenting therapy and asking the court to make him attend.
Last October, a judge ruled in favor of the actress, but also pointed out that Martinez had already done what she asked after she filed a lawsuit against him.
According to documents obtained by US Weekly, Halle Berry has spent more than $200,000 on legal fees, and also voluntarily paid $80,000 towards the legal costs of her ex, Olivier Martinez.
She also claimed the actor was supporting himself financially using her child support payments.
Berry is asking the court to grant her full custody of their child, stating that Maceo is falling behind in school. She explained he’s been diagnosed with ADHD and a mild form of dyslexia, and is currently performing several grade levels below his peers.
Berry stated that Martinez either didn’t realize he was struggling or didn’t care about the problems, and she believes this demonstrates he shouldn’t have custody.
Martinez was famously involved in a physical altercation with Gabriel Aubry, the ex-boyfriend she shares a daughter, Nahla, with.
Martinez started dating Berry the same year she and Aubry announced their split.
In 2012, the two were involved in a public altercation with her former partner, Aubry, on Thanksgiving. She had just brought their daughter, Nahla, to Berry’s house in Los Angeles.
Martinez and Aubrey began arguing, and the disagreement quickly escalated into a physical fight. Aubrey alleged that Martinez threatened his life. Both men required hospital treatment for injuries sustained in the altercation.
Aubrey was arrested and issued a restraining order as a result of the incident.
Gabriel Aubry (2005 – 2010)
After her second divorce, Halle Berry started dating model Gabriel Aubry in 2005. The couple broke up in 2010.
Though they never married, they share daughter Nahla Ariela, 17, together.
Berry has spent years embroiled in costly custody battles with the fathers of her two children.
Following a 2014 legal battle, Halle Berry was ordered to pay her ex, Gabriel Aubry, $16,000 each month, along with a one-time payment of $115,000. She later publicly criticized the amount, calling it an attempt at extortion.
By 2021, she managed to reduce the monthly payments to $8,000. However, the Academy Award winner also had to give him an extra 4.3 percent of any yearly earnings exceeding $1.95 million.
In 2023, despite previously earning around $10 million per film, Berry successfully negotiated to limit her salary to $4.5 million.
Honestly, even after everything, she’s still just… incredible. The most amazing person I’ve ever met, truly. And I just know we’ll always care for each other, always have that love and respect, no matter what. It’s just… undeniable. I said it after we split, and I mean it now – she’s forever special to me.
Despite promising to stay friends and co-parent, they quickly ended up in court when Berry attempted to move to France with their daughter Nahla to be with her former partner, Martinez.
Eric Benét (2001 – 2005)
Halle Berry and Eric Benét married in 2001 after dating for two years, but their marriage ended in divorce, which was finalized in 2005.
Last year, Halle Berry appeared to criticize her ex-husband when she publicly questioned his assertions about having a sex addiction.
Okay, so she never said his name, but everyone knew back in 2002! It was all over the place – she went to rehab, and it was totally because of him! They said it was for sex addiction, and honestly, I always knew he was the reason. I mean, it just had to be!
During an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, she expressed strong disbelief in her second husband’s claim of sex addiction, using emphatic language to convey her skepticism.
I remember one of my ex-husbands claimed he was a sex addict, but honestly, I never bought it for a second. It just didn’t ring true to me, and I really don’t believe in that label.
She previously told Entertainment Weekly that she and her spouse had been experiencing marital problems for a while.
She told the publication that she and Eric have been struggling in their marriage for a while and have been trying to resolve their issues together.
This is really hard to say, but I think we both need some space right now to figure things out. It’s a tough time for us emotionally, and we’d really appreciate it if everyone could respect our privacy while we work through this.
There were many rumors at the time that Benét had cheated on Berry repeatedly, fueled by claims he struggled with sex addiction.
After their breakup, he denied being a sex addict in an interview with ABC News.
In July 2004, he stated he wasn’t a sex addict, but rather someone who made ‘really, really stupid, painful mistakes’ due to a difficult period in his life and emotional struggles.
David Justice (1993 – 1997)
Berry’s first husband was former MLB player David Justice.
They started dating in 1992, after she first noticed him while he was playing in a celebrity baseball game on MTV.
Berry later gave the sports player, 59, her phone number through a reporter that they both knew.
They married on New Year’s Day in 1993 after a fast-moving romance, but split up in 1996. Their divorce was completed the next year.
In a 2007 interview with Parade magazine, Halle Berry revealed she experienced depression and attempted suicide after her divorce.
The actress shared with Today that she used to have very low self-esteem and had to actively work on changing her mindset to recognize her own value.
Just because one person didn’t love me didn’t mean I wasn’t worthy of love. I made a firm decision to always be brave.
As someone who follows relationship dynamics closely, I was really struck by Justice’s recent openness about their past marriage. They shared some incredibly insightful thoughts on what could have made things work, and honestly, it was a really valuable lesson for all of us. It wasn’t about blame, but about recognizing where things went off track and what steps might have been taken to turn things around.
Justice discussed the issue on the All The Smoke podcast, explaining that after a happy start to their marriage, he started to wonder if his wife was the right person to start a family with.
The athlete shared that he hadn’t had much relationship experience before marrying Berry, admitting he was still learning about love and relationships at the time.
Justice shared that growing up in the Midwest shaped his views on relationships. He admitted he used to believe a wife should traditionally handle household tasks like cooking and cleaning, and that’s what he expected when he thought about marriage.
I started to wonder if she was the right person to have children with and create a family with.
David explained that when they first started out, his partner didn’t cook, didn’t clean, and didn’t seem naturally inclined to be a mother, which led to problems.
He recalled the Hollywood actress asking him to marry her after only five months of dating.
The baseball player explained he agreed to the offer because it was too good to refuse, but confessed he wasn’t completely enthusiastic about it.
‘But I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment.’
Soon after getting married, the couple began to realize they weren’t compatible, and their demanding jobs kept them apart for long periods.
David explained that they were often separated due to his wife’s work on films filmed in various locations. He then shared his thoughts on what might have saved their marriage.
Looking back, I think we might have been able to work things out if we’d known about therapy. Had we understood the benefits of therapy, we likely could have saved the relationship.
Berry responded to the criticism with a post on Instagram. The photo showed her in a bikini with Van Hunt, and the caption read, ‘Phew…! Cooking, cleaning, and being a mom.’
Van Hunt (2020 – Present)
On Thursday, Berry confirmed that she will wed her beau Van Hunt.
The celebrity explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that he proposed to her, but she turned him down.
‘No, that’s not the case. I did not say no. We just don’t have a date.’
After a moment, Berry happily confirmed she had accepted his proposal, joking that he’d already given her a ring.
Calling it ‘little’ is ironic, given the bauble’s impressive size. It features a central diamond and a square-cut design, all set on a substantial gold band.
The actress, known for her role in Crime 101, was talking about a recent interview with The Cut. In it, she shared that her neo-soul singer boyfriend proposed in June, and while she hadn’t accepted, she’d consider marrying him – jokingly citing ‘health reasons’ because of the benefits that come with being legally married.
Berry and Hunt connected through Berry’s brother in April 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic was peaking. They chatted by text and phone for four months before finally meeting in person for their first date.
The Re-spin co-founder remembers that after her third divorce, people began to question her, wondering what was wrong and why she couldn’t maintain a relationship.
I avoided giving interviews for about ten years because I grew weary of repeating the same narrative. It always focused on my personal life, framing me as someone constantly facing heartbreak.
Berry explained that she’s never believed in staying with someone just for the sake of it. She said, ‘Why would I keep a man who isn’t right for me?’ She also shared that she’s currently in the happiest and healthiest relationship of her life.
Berry’s groom-to-be has an adult son called Drake from a previous relationship.
