Charlie Hunnam has potentially upset a lot of Australians by strongly criticizing their coffee. He bravely risked causing offense with his ruthless comments.
This week, the British actor was a guest on Australia’s ABC breakfast radio show, where he discussed his opinions about the country.
Okay, so Charlie Hunnam, my absolute *idol*, said something and I just HAVE to talk about it. He’s 45, can you believe it?! Anyway, he said he *likes* Melbourne, which, good for him! But… he doesn’t get why everyone there acts like their coffee is the best in the world! Seriously, he thinks all the hype is a little much. I mean, can you imagine?! He’s so real, pointing out what everyone’s thinking! It’s just… perfection.
I’m just done hearing about coffee,” he explained. “I prefer a really strong, bold cup of dark roast, black – the kind that’s so strong a spoon will stand up straight in it,” he said.
This is likely to cause a lot of disagreement, so be prepared. Honestly, I don’t think your coffee tastes very good. It’s more like a warm, milky coffee shake. That’s not what I would consider a proper cup of coffee.
Adding to the host’s surprise, Charlie continued to strongly criticize Melbourne’s well-known coffee scene.
“Leave the coffee alone. And please, stop saying you have the best coffee in the world-you’re ruining it,” he said angrily.
Charlie spoke positively about Melbourne, saying, ‘Melbourne is one of my favourite cities in the world – maybe my favourite city in the world.‘
The actor is enjoying great success thanks to his critically acclaimed performance in the Netflix series Monster: The Ed Gein Story, where he portrays the notorious serial killer.
This follows Charlie and his partner of many years, Morgana McNelis, being seen together at the 2025 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last month.
The couple, known for keeping to themselves, have been together for over 20 years. On Sunday evening, they were photographed on the red carpet, smiling and close together as they posed for pictures, with their arms linked.
As a style expert, I have to say, Pacific Rim’s star looked incredibly sharp! He was wearing a really sleek, double-breasted suit jacket by Saint Laurent. He kept things effortlessly cool with a midnight-blue silk shirt – just a few buttons undone for that perfect, relaxed vibe. It’s a look that’s both sophisticated and approachable, and I’m definitely adding it to my inspiration board!
Meanwhile, McNelis, 42, looked stunning in a golden satin gown. The dress flowed beautifully and had a plunging neckline.
I remember back in 2020, Charlie Hunnam shared something really interesting. He said he felt pretty indifferent to the idea of marriage itself, and it made a lot of sense when you learn he actually got married to Katharine Towne when he was only 18! It’s just a different perspective, you know?

The ex-couple got married in Las Vegas after dating for just three weeks in 1999, but they divorced in 2002.
During an interview on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show, Hunnam stated he would marry again, but seemed hesitant about it. He indicated he’d get hitched again, though not enthusiastically.
He explained he would marry McNelis because it mattered to her, but clarified he wasn’t in love with the idea of it. ‘I’ll do it because it’s important to her but I don’t have any great romantic feelings towards it,’ he said of marrying McNelis.
He took back the statements within a few weeks, telling TooFab that what he said was ‘a stupid thing to say.’
The Queer as Folk actor shared that he upset his girlfriend and immediately wished he hadn’t said it, admitting, “That really hurt her feelings and I really regretted saying that.”
I didn’t mean what I said, honestly. It was, quite simply, foolish things I blurted out when I was feeling emotional.
Hunnam explained, ‘I’m a really romantic person, and truthfully, I feel like I’m already married. I’ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for 14 years. What I was trying to say is that official government approval of marriage isn’t important to me, but the romantic idea of it means a great deal.’
The celebrity explained that his remarks were a result of spending ’12 hours a day for three days doing interviews.’
