The fifth episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ featured the highly anticipated Trial of Seven battle. After a lot of build-up in the previous episode, Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and Prince Aerion Targaryen’s teams clashed in an intense fight with significant consequences, including the death of an important character.
Recently, the actor who plays the character and the show’s creator talked about why the character died. They each shared their thoughts on this major plot point.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5 ending reveals who dies and lives
Episode 5 ends with the conclusion of the Trial of Seven. Dunk, though badly injured by Aerion during their duel, quickly turns the tables and gains the advantage. Seeing he’s about to lose, Aerion surrenders and admits his earlier claims against Dunk were false.
It’s heartbreaking, but during the battle, Baelor Targaryen was tragically struck in the head with a mace by Maekar. The injury was just too severe, and sadly, he didn’t survive. As a fan, it was a really tough moment to watch.
Ira Parker and Bertie Carvel talk about Baelor’s death in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bertie Carvel revealed that the show’s creators considered a few different ways to portray how his character, Baelor, died, including whether Maekar intentionally killed him or if it was an accident.
He described the experience as very exciting, especially collaborating with Ira and Sarah Smith, the director of episode six. He explained that his character has a strong ambition to be the heir, potentially even at the cost of his brother’s life. Despite any remorse or sadness he feels, he understands that his brother’s death would put him next in line for the throne.
Ira Parker commented that Baelor’s willingness to risk his life in the Trial of Seven showed just how much sacrifice might be necessary to improve Westeros, and perhaps even the world around us.
Parker pointed out that while Baelor died during the Trial of Seven, Dunk lived. He also recalled Dunk saying in the following episode, “Perhaps one day the realm will need my help as much as, or even more than, it needs a prince’s life.”
The showrunner then mentioned a scene from Game of Thrones where Jack Gleeson’s character, Joffrey Baratheon, is looking through the Book of Brothers. He pointed out that Ser Duncan had four pages in the book at one point, suggesting he wasn’t entirely off base in understanding the potential value of Baelor’s sacrifice. Parker elaborated on this connection.
