A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Showrunner Got 1 Note From George R.R. Martin

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I found a recent panel discussion with Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell really interesting. Claffey, who’s playing Ser Duncan the Tall in the new spin-off, shared something amazing. Apparently, George R.R. Martin himself visited the set and gave showrunner Ira Parker a specific warning – I’m dying to know what it was!

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star reveals what George R.R. Martin told showrunner

Peter Claffey, who plays Ser Duncan the Tall in the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, shared a story about a visit from George R.R. Martin on set. Speaking at CCXP 2025 in Brazil, Claffey said Martin told the cast that The Hedge Knight – the book the show is based on – is his most beloved work. Martin then jokingly, but seriously, cautioned showrunner Ira Parker not to ruin it, according to Collider.

Claffey said he seemed very pleased with our work and with everyone involved, particularly Daniel Ings, who plays Lyonel Baratheon. He emphasized how delighted he was with everything.

So, earlier this year, George R.R. Martin finally gave us an update on ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ over on his website. Basically, it’s finished! He said Ira and his team wrapped up filming months ago and are already deep into editing. He’s actually seen all six episodes – even a couple of rough cuts – and he loved them, which is a huge relief as a fan!

He also talked about the actors, saying he’s always loved the characters Dunk and Egg, and the performers they found to play them are fantastic. He praised the entire cast, especially teasing that fans will be excited to meet the characters known as the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on January 18, 2026, on both HBO and HBO Max. Production on Season 2, which will be based on the novel The Sworn Sword, is expected to start shortly.
