In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Parker revealed the straightforward reason Ser Arlan received a unique item in the show, and why it was prominently featured in the season’s second episode. He explained:
I can’t quite recall if Ser Arlan had a prosthetic limb. I seem to remember him arriving on set that way, but it might have been a special effect. I really felt sorry for him, though. He was the only one who consistently looked out for Dunk and truly stayed by his side. It was a sad end – dying on a lonely, muddy road and being buried without any proper recognition. Now, Dunk is searching for anyone who even remembers Ser Arlan, the people he served and fought for, those knights and lords he dedicated himself to.
They’d completely forgotten his name. I just wanted to do something nice for him, a little throwback to a fun, energetic vibe, I guess.
Viewers are sharply divided on the new series, and Ser Arlan’s portrayal will likely be seen differently because of it. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has received very polarized reviews – some praise it as a fresh take on the Thrones universe, while others criticize it for lacking the dragons and large-scale battles that made Game of Thrones so popular.
