This weekend, fans can revisit the world of Westeros, originally created by Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, coming to HBO and planned for the 2026 TV lineup, will offer a fresh take on the seven kingdoms in some significant ways, and I’m really looking forward to it.
This Will Be A Smaller Story, And A Funnier One
Both Game of Thrones and its prequel, House of the Dragon (starting its third season in 2026), focused on the lives of powerful families and their struggles for control, unfolding across large landscapes. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be different – it will be a more intimate story with a smaller scope.
This story is adapted from The Hedge Knight, the first of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series. These novellas are smaller in scale than his Song of Ice and Fire books, like Game of Thrones. “Dunk” is Ser Duncan the Tall, a famous Kingsguard member briefly mentioned in Game of Thrones, but this story takes place much earlier in his life. “Egg” is Aegon Targaryen, who will one day become King Aegon V.
The Season Is Shorter, And So Is Each Episode
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have six episodes, each around 30 minutes long, and I’m really excited about that! While I enjoy House of the Dragon, some episodes feel too long and the show can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to get through. These shorter, more fast-paced episodes will be a welcome change. Of course, if the show is good, I’m sure I’ll still wish they were longer sometimes! It also looks like this new series will have a lot more humor. It’s not going to be a comedy, but the shorter format and the trailer suggest it’ll be quite funny.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” feels like a lighter, more comedic take on the world of “Game of Thrones.” It focuses on a smaller story with more personal stakes and offers a lot of fun. While it doesn’t deliver the large-scale epic storytelling fans might anticipate, that’s actually a good thing – it’s a refreshing change that could revitalize the franchise.
