Ira Parker, the co-creator and showrunner of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” addressed fan worries about a significant change made from George R.R. Martin’s original story. During a recent online Q&A, Parker acknowledged that removing a particular scene was a mistake and explained how important it was to the story’s central theme.
Ira Parker on one change from book being a ‘mistake’ in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
In a recent Reddit Q&A, Ira Parker, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, admitted that one alteration from the source material was an error. A fan pointed out that a crucial conversation between Dunk and Steely Pate – where Pate describes a knight as someone who “remembered his vows” – was left out of the show. Parker responded by taking responsibility, saying, “Honestly, it was a mistake on my part. I’ve made a few on this show, and I probably will again.” He explained that the scene had been included in earlier versions of the script but was ultimately cut.
Parker said he understood why the fan felt that the line about ‘a knight who remembers his vows’ was so important, calling it the heart of the story. He added that this idea is still central to the show, even though he accidentally cut a scene referencing it. He believes Dunk’s behavior consistently reflects this principle, regardless of whether it’s directly stated.
This scene happens when Dunk is at his most vulnerable. He’s heading into a dangerous joust, not knowing if anyone will even back him up. The way the common people react and what Pate says show Dunk’s strong sense of right and wrong and how much he cares about them. It’s a turning point in the story, shifting the focus to new themes.
The team initially wrote the line, but it was later cut when they adjusted the script. However, Parker pointed out that the show still gets its main point across through the actions of the character Dunk. He openly admitted the error, joking, “I’ve made worse mistakes on this show, and I will again.”
Fans continue to debate this scene, considering it a key part of the original story. Parker’s remarks show he understands how important it is, but also how difficult it was to adapt a short story into a six-part series.
