Since premiering on Netflix last Friday, October 24th, A House of Dynamite has quickly become the most popular movie globally. The political thriller, directed by Katherine Bigelow and featuring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Gabriel Basso, has topped the streaming charts, though its ambiguous ending has sparked debate.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kathryn Bigelow discussed how she approaches filmmaking, explaining that she often begins a project with a central question to explore.
The film Hurt Locker explored how Iraqi insurgents operated and the most brutal aspects of the war. Zero Dark Thirty asked why it took a decade to locate Osama Bin Laden. This new film is similar—it presents a question and lets the audience decide what the answer is.

So, the writer, Noah Oppenheim, and I really wanted the movie to make you think at the end. We didn’t want to just hand you all the answers or wrap everything up neatly. We wanted you to really lean in and decide for yourself what it all meant – no easy outs!
Our goal was to encourage people to think and talk about the topic, and we’re grateful to Netflix for allowing Kathryn to create the film she originally imagined. The fact that the ending is sparking discussion is precisely what we were hoping to achieve.
Told through three viewpoints—inside the White House Situation Room, at the Strategic Command, and from the President’s perspective—A House of Dynamite follows the government’s reaction to a deadly missile attack on the United States over the course of 18 minutes.
I’m so excited about this movie! Idris Elba is playing the President, which is amazing, and Rebecca Ferguson is Captain Olivia Walker – she’ll be in the White House Situation Room, leading things. Gabriel Basso is also in it as Jake Baerington, a Deputy National Security Advisor. The cast is seriously impressive!
The film also features Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, Jason Clarke, and Kaitlyn Dever.
We called A House of Dynamite one of the year’s best films on Netflix, and highlighted its ending as deliberately thought-provoking – designed to spark conversation, even if it frustrates some viewers, which is exactly what the filmmakers intended.
