A guide to Dua Lipa’s Latin American cover songs

Starting in early November, British singer Dua Lipa has been touring Latin America, performing concerts to promote her 2024 album, “Radical Optimism.”

The Grammy-winning artist not only performs her popular songs but also covers a local country song each night. These covers have often become popular online, generating a lot of excitement among fans.

Dua Lipa’s tour ends Friday in Mexico City at GNP Seguros Stadium. Here’s a look back at all the Spanish and Portuguese songs she’s covered during the past month.

Argentina

Olivia Rodrigo kicked off the Latin American portion of her tour on November 7th at the Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires. To celebrate the night, she performed a cover of the classic Argentine rock song “De Música Ligera” by Soda Stereo, a huge hit from 1990.

Hearing Dua Lipa speak to the crowd in Buenos Aires was amazing! She told us how much everyone here loves rock music, and then she said she felt like we all knew the song she was about to cover. She asked us to sing along if we did, and honestly, the energy was incredible! It felt like everyone did know it, and we all joined in.

During her last concert in Buenos Aires, Dua Lipa surprised the audience by performing a cover of “Tu Misterioso Alguien,” a popular song by the Argentine electropop group Miranda!

Chile

On November 11th, Dua Lipa performed her first concert at Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile. During the show, she unexpectedly sang a cover of Chilean artist Mon Laferte’s song, “Tu Falta de Querer,” which delighted the audience.

So, after my cover of Dua Lipa’s song started getting some buzz online, I was absolutely floored when Dua herself reached out! She personally invited me to perform at one of her concerts – it was a dream come true, honestly. A total surprise and a huge honor.

Laferte described the cover song as a wonderful surprise. In a November 13th interview with Univision Canada, she also revealed that Dua Lipa had asked her to perform together in Chile. Unfortunately, Laferte had a conflict – she was scheduled to be at the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas – and couldn’t accept the invitation.

Music

These days, many pop stars build their fame on being openly vulnerable and sharing their personal struggles. Dua Lipa stands out as someone who remains remarkably composed and focused on her work.

But Laferte was still just as surprised as anyone else by Lipa’s song choice.

She explained in the interview that she was surprised to hear her host sing ‘Tu Falta de Querer.’ She’d expected to be the one performing a song, and was deeply touched by the invitation. Seeing her host sing her song was a beautiful moment, especially because the performance was so heartfelt and genuine – you could really feel the emotion in every word.

The next night, the singer of “Dance the Night” performed “El Duelo,” a song originally released by La Ley in 1995. You can watch the performance here.

Brazil

Dua Lipa finally responded to fans’ long-standing requests for her to perform in Brazil with a show on November 15th at Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo.

The concert audience got a special treat with two unexpected songs and some surprise guests. First, pop singer Dua Lipa performed Sérgio Mendes’ “Magalenha” with renowned Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. She impressed everyone by flawlessly singing all the Portuguese lyrics to the lively and challenging song.

Brown posted a video of their performance with Dua on social media, expressing gratitude for the invitation and the enthusiastic crowd in São Paulo.

During a performance in Rio de Janeiro a week later, Dua Lipa surprised the audience with a rendition of Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66’s classic song, “Mas Que Nada.” This song, along with João Gilberto’s “Garota de Ipanema,” played a key role in introducing Brazilian music to the world.

Peru

Dua Lipa surprised her Peruvian fans in Lima with a performance of the classic song “Cariñito.” She shared the stage at Estadio San Marcos with Peruvian cumbia singer Mauricio Mesones for the cover.

Colombia

During her concert in Bogotá on November 28th, the singer of “One Kiss” surprised the audience by performing a cover of Shakira’s hit song “Antología,” originally released in 1995.

Dua Lipa shared an excited message after her Bogotá concert, saying she’ll be riding the high from the incredible night for days. She posted a photo from the performance on Instagram with a caption in Spanish expressing her gratitude.

Shakira also took to Instagram to express gratitude for Lipa’s homage.

The singer shared how moved they were to hear their song performed by Dua Lipa, especially since it happened in the same city where they originally wrote it years ago. They celebrated the unifying power of music, noting the connection between an artist from London and one from Barranquilla, and expressed their gratitude to Dua Lipa for the incredible experience.

Mexico

Dua Lipa kicked off her three concerts in Mexico City on Monday with a performance of a cover song – a rendition of Luis Miguel’s version of “Bésame Mucho.”

Before performing a cover of the song, the Golden Globe-nominated artist spoke to the audience in Spanish about the incredible Mexican composer, Consuelo Velázquez. She explained that the song holds a special place in the hearts of people worldwide. She shared a charming story about how Velázquez reportedly wrote the song before ever experiencing a kiss, adding that she believes songwriters often write about the things they hope to achieve in their own lives.

During her concert in Mexico City on Tuesday, Dua Lipa surprised the audience by bringing out Fher Olvera, the lead singer of the popular Mexican rock band Maná. Together, they performed Maná’s hit song “Oye Mi Amor,” which first became popular in 1992.

Dua Lipa announced in Spanish that they were fortunate to have a special guest perform, and then Olvera ran onstage to a huge round of applause.

Earlier that night, Lipa shared how thankful she was to finish her tour in Mexico City.

On Friday, the Mexican rock band played their 43rd concert in the Los Angeles area, breaking Bruce Springsteen’s record for the most arena shows ever performed there.

She told the crowd she’s been reflecting on all the amazing moments from the year, and being with them tonight was the perfect way to finish the tour. She expressed her gratitude to Mexico for consistently supporting her and making her feel welcome, sharing that she feels a strong bond with the country and its people and promises to return often.

It’s still unknown what song Dua Lipa will end her tour with, but she’s promised it will be a very energetic and proudly Mexican song.
