A “gripping” thriller with Cillian Murphy and Toby Jones is being removed by Prime Video this month

The engaging war thriller titled “Anthropoid,” featuring actors like Cillian Murphy and Toby Jones, will no longer be available on Prime Video by the end of this month.

In 2016, I was captivated by a film that recounted the true tale of Jozef Gabčík (portrayed by Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), two brave Czechoslovakian soldiers living in exile. They were the masterminds behind an audacious plan to execute Reinhard Heydrich, a prominent SS officer, during World War II.

Featuring Jones as the head of the Prague-based resistance, “Anthropoid” can still be watched on Prime Video, but viewers should act fast because it will be taken off the streaming platform on the 30th of this month.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d like to share my thoughts about “Anthropoid,” a gripping film directed by Sean Ellis, who collaborated with Anthony Frewin on the screenplay. Upon its debut, this thriller garnered generally favorable responses from critics, as evidenced by its 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 105 reviews.

The review site concluded that the movie, titled “Anthropoid,” executed its task somewhat inconsistently but presented a captivating historical tale with exceptional acting performances. On the other hand, The Irish Times labeled the film as an intelligent and mature drama.

According to The Observer, Ellis skillfully filmed and directed the movie, demonstrating a keen sensitivity towards the eerie elegance found in this occupied city. He effectively portrays not only the intense fear of battle but also the oppressive, lifeless monotony that comes with it.

The Guardian shared a favorable review, calling it “smart, strong, and captivating,” while The Daily Telegraph praised it as a film that fittingly honors the bravery of two men who significantly impacted the Second World War’s outcome.

According to Slant Magazine, Director Sean Ellis’ movie delivers a powerful analysis of the ethical justification behind resistance. On the other hand, Empire Magazine described it as an engaging and emotional portrayal of a significant yet often overlooked episode in European history.

Although Anthropoid isn’t widely recognized as one of Murphy’s more prominent works, he is set to reprise his iconic character, Tommy Shelby, in The Immortal Man – a sequel to the critically acclaimed BBC series Peaky Blinders.

Anthropoid is available on Prime Video until 30 July.

The latest print edition from Digital Spy is out now! Purchase the “Oasis – Live in ’25” issue at your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
