A “gripping” and “complex” Irish crime thriller lands new UK streaming home

A recent and acclaimed Irish crime thriller has found a new UK streaming home.

In “Amongst the Wolves,” starring Aidan Gillen from “The Wire,” a fresh face named Daniel Fee, and its own screenwriter Luke McQuillan, the narrative revolves around a former soldier battling post-traumatic stress disorder who finds himself homeless in the streets of Dublin.

In short time, he encounters a teenager living on the streets too, viewing it as a fresh opportunity. Yet, their lives intertwine with a menacing drug cartel led by an unstable character portrayed by Gillen.

Mark O’Connor, known for directing movies like “Cardboard Gangsters” and “King of the Travellers”, is the one responsible for this movie’s direction.

The movie “Amongst the Wolves” can be purchased or rented digitally for a few months now, but you can also stream it using a Cinema subscription on either Sky or NOW streaming services.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 16 reviews with a very respectable 88% positive score.

As a dedicated gamer, diving into the world of cinematics, I’ve noticed that this movie presents an intriguing dichotomy. It’s essentially like playing two distinct levels in a game: one level is an immersive drama where you’re struggling to survive on the streets, and the other is a pulse-pounding thriller where you’re fighting to break free from the grasp of a formidable underworld kingpin.

According to Everything’s Interesting, Amongst the Wolves attempts to juggle two aspects, yet doesn’t always manage to strike a perfect balance. However, McQuillan manages to keep both sides of the movie cohesive by virtue of his strong determination.

In simpler terms, Film Focus stated that “Amongst the Wolves” is a captivating thriller, although they felt the story could have been developed more. Meanwhile, The Irish Times commented that while the ending was strong enough to overlook some initial rough spots in the movie.

The Irish Independent described the film as a gritty, intricate thriller, albeit with under-explored storylines, but manages to hold its own thanks to its large doses of warmth.

Amongst the Wolves is now available to stream via Sky/NOW with the relevant Cinema subscription.
