A fourth season of Ted Lasso depends on this one important thing

As a gamer with a heart for well-crafted narratives and a soft spot for underdog stories, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when thinking about Ted Lasso. The show, which debuted in 2020, quickly became one of my favorite series on Apple TV+, offering a unique blend of humor, drama, and heartwarming moments that resonated with viewers worldwide.

Enthusiasts remain optimistic about the possibility of another season for “Ted Lasso”, and its co-creator has hinted that the decision lies in just one factor.

Immediately upon its release in 2020, “Ted Lasso” emerged as one of Apple TV+’s most successful shows. Initially appearing to be a straightforward comedy, it unveiled a plot where the owner of a British football club (played by Hannah Waddingham) covertly schemes to undermine her team. To accomplish this, she recruits the show’s titular character, Jason Sudeikis, an American college football coach with no familiarity with England or soccer. His mission is to transform the team into a winning squad.

Despite being fantastical in nature, the series garnered an immense fanbase due to its sincere core, skillfully intertwining drama with its captivating ensemble. Critics showered it with praise, culminating in a grand total of 11 Emmy Awards, including three for Best Comedy Series and individual accolades for Sudeikis, Waddingham, and Goldstein.

Initially, the plan was for the series to last just three seasons, and the final episode appeared to tie up all loose ends. This was achieved through a montage depicting the future lives of characters with joyful conclusions for everyone. However, considering the show’s widespread appeal, it’s understandable that both fans and Apple TV+ would demand more content.

Bill Lawrence, one of the creators, indicated to Collider that ultimately, whether the show continues or not depends on Jason Sudeikis’ desire to take it further.

Groupthink sometimes happens, even without talking to each other, and every actor, actress, writer, producer on that show — and [we didn’t get] together and decide this was the message — we all loved the experience. As fans, we’d all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it.

It sounds good, but sadly, there are reasons it may not happen.

Why a Ted Lasso return may be unlikely

It seems logical that Sudeikis might embrace the opportunity to revisit a role that earned him Emmys and holds a special place among fans as his finest. However, Lawrence highlighted a significant concern: the show demands extensive filming in England, which could be a turnoff for American cast members, including Sudeikis, who is a devoted single father to two kids and might prefer to avoid lengthy stays abroad.

Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal. So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m down for whatever he wants to do.

As a dedicated gamer, I find myself in a similar situation with a beloved game series. Just like Jason Sudeikis, the actor portraying my favorite character, seems content with how the third season ended and sees no need for additional installments. He’s eager to dive into fresh challenges and new adventures, rather than returning to the same setting for another year of filming when there’s little incentive to continue.

There’s a chance Sudeikis might reconsider his decision if he finds additional layers to Ted’s story that he finds compelling, and fans are eagerly anticipating this possibility. Just like many other shows that appeared to conclude their stories, it could be feasible for Ted to take on the role of coaching another team again.

Currently, it seems like the series “Ted Lasso” has concluded, but its enthusiastic fanbase would certainly appreciate another chance to see Coach Ted inspiring once more.
