A forgotten Benedict Cumberbatch “heartbreaking” drama is now streaming for free
You can now watch Benedict Cumberbatch‘s heart-wrenching television movie titled “The Child in Time” on Channel 4’s online streaming service.
First broadcasted on BBC One in September 2017, this movie features Benedict Cumberbatch and Kelly Macdonald playing the roles of Stephen and Julie Lewis, a married pair who face an emotionally devastating moment when their four-year-old child disappears.
Under the guidance of director Julian Farino and writer Stephen Butchard, the television adaptation of “The Child in Time” takes on Ian McEwan’s 1987 novel, which explores the heart-wrenching journey of a couple dealing with an immense loss.

In 2017, the drama titled “The Child in Time” garnered mainly favorable critiques. “Good Housekeeping” described it as a heart-wrenching piece, while “The Guardian” praised it as a profoundly moving depiction of loss and its impact on love.
“It is painful, but not entirely without hope, given time,” the Guardian review read.
In addition to Cumberbatch and McDonald, who gave powerful performances, the movie also features Stephen Campbell Moore and Saskia Reeves portraying Stephen’s close friend Charles Darke and his wife Thelma respectively.
Besides Cumberbatch and McDonald, who delivered strong performances, the film also includes Stephen Campbell Moore and Saskia Reeves playing the roles of Stephen’s good friend Charles Darke and his spouse Thelma.
In this production, John Hopkins takes on the role of the Home Secretary, whereas Beatrice White assumes the character of Kate, the daughter of Stephen and Julie.
In 2018, the TV series made its debut overseas, being aired on PBS’s Masterpiece. Back then, IndieWire’s critique highlighted the show’s unconventional approach to depicting Stephen’s mourning, which was not presented in a strictly chronological manner.
The critic pointed out that the audience should join Stephen on this peculiar, personal odyssey, as it’s essential to experience the pain and bewilderment in order for a release or purging of emotions to take place.
For “The Child in Time,” finding a glimmer of hope involves a difficult journey, but the resolution unfolds with deliberate grace and beauty.
The Child in Time is streaming on Channel 4’s platform.
