A Forgotten ’90s Isekai Anime Is Finally Coming to Netflix

I’m so excited! As an anime fan, I just heard amazing news: Magic Knight Rayearth is coming to Netflix in early 2026! And get this – a brand new anime version is actually planned for release later this year, so it’s the perfect time to revisit (or discover!) this classic.

The first season of Magic Knight Rayearth will start streaming on Netflix in the United States on January 15th. Originally released in 1994, this anime tells the story of three girls who are magically transported from Japan to a fantasy world and tasked with rescuing a missing princess. The series is based on a manga by CLAMP and originally consisted of 49 episodes across two seasons.

Magic Knight Rayearth Combines the Best of Isekai & Mecha Anime

With the arrival of Magic Knight Rayearth on Netflix, this popular anime series is now easier for U.S. fans to watch. While all episodes are currently available on Crunchyroll and Retro Crush, adding it to Netflix makes it convenient for existing fans to rewatch without needing extra subscriptions, and a great way for new viewers to discover the show.

This series is a cornerstone of the ‘isekai’ genre – stories where characters are transported to another world – which became incredibly popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Even now, it’s considered one of the best in the genre because it focuses on meaningful character development, sacrifice, and emotional growth, rather than relying on the usual tropes of instantly powerful heroes.

Magic Knight Rayearth isn’t easily categorized, and that’s part of what makes it special. It successfully blends the heartwarming themes of magical-girl anime like Sailor Moon with the exciting action of mecha shows like Escaflowne. This unique combination helped the series stand out and become a memorable title in 1990s anime.
