A fight for justice in ‘Rebel Ridge’
As a cinephile who’s seen more films than I care to count, I can confidently say that “Rebel Ridge” is a standout addition to the Netflix library. This gritty drama, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, delves deep into the murky waters of corruption and injustice – issues that have always resonated with me, having spent more time in courtrooms than I’d care to admit.
In the latest Netflix movie, “Rebel Ridge“, currently available for streaming, the questions arise: When our systems and establishments fail to act justly, how do we react? What extremes might one reach for justice? These are the thought-provoking issues explored in this film.
In this film directed by Jeremy Saulnier, we first encounter protagonist Terry Richmond, played by Aaron Pierre, pedaling along a highway on his bicycle. His destination is a modest town, where he intends to free his cousin from imprisonment. The journey holds significant significance for him. Unfortunately, two policemen (David Denman and Emory Cohen) force him off the road. They interrogate Terry and inspect his bag, discovering the funds earmarked for his crucial endeavor.
The officers took the money from Terry even though he begged, then they abandoned him, wounded and bleeding. He made his way to the courthouse, arriving late and without enough funds. There, he encountered a compassionate clerk named Annasophia Robb who was familiar with the concept of justice in that town. She offered him guidance, but Terry chose to act on his own ideas instead.
On the next day, Terry visits the police station with the intention of filing a report, but finds the Police Chief (Don Johnson) unwilling to listen sympathetically. With few alternatives left and determined to rescue his cousin and put an end to the corruption, Terry relies on his training and decides to take matters into his own hands to eliminate the oppressors from the town.
There is a quiet strength to Terry, which is a credit to Pierre. He inhabits the role beautifully and gives a physical and imposing performance that is never loud or showy. It fits seamlessly in the world of the film built by Saulnier.
The plot and the crafting of the world are both robust and convincing. I admire the skillful touch that Saulnier employs to breathe life into this tale. I found the journey and the storyline engaging, complete with some exciting action sequences.
For those looking for a solid and engaging drama, this is a great option to stream on Netflix.
