A ‘delightfully entertaining’ ’60s-set period drama is now streaming – don’t miss out
Ladies in Black, the period drama taking place in 1960s Australia, is now streaming in the UK.
In the vibrant city of Sydney, the story unfolds around a team of skilled saleswomen at an upscale department store. One day, high school student Lisa Miles (portrayed by Clare Hughes) secures a summer job there and finds herself delving into the intricate and demanding realm of retail.
Eager-eyed Lisa gradually uncovers details about the mysterious ‘women in black’, including their careers and complex love lives. Over time, as they grow closer, a strong connection develops between them.

In June 2024, the initial season of the period drama, featuring six episodes, premiered on Australian network ABC. However, UK viewers can now enjoy the show since it’s been made accessible through streaming service U, previously known as UKTV Play.
The television show, titled “Ladies in Black,” is led by a group of female characters. Among them are the sophisticated British woman Mrs. Virginia Ambrose, portrayed by Miranda Otto, the contented and married Fay Janosi, played by Jessica De Gouw, and the ambitious businesswoman Magda Szombathelyi, brought to life by Debi Mazar.
While Azizi Donnelly takes on the character of Angela Mansour, the daughter of a leading fashion house’s boss, there could be more to her assistant’s friendly demeanor than meets the eye, hinting at a possible secret motive.
As a devoted admirer of Madeleine St John’s captivating novel “The Women in Black,” published in 1993 and later brought to life on the big screen in 2018, I can’t help but express my appreciation for its unique blend of engaging storytelling and profound thought-provoking elements.
It’s intriguing to recall the limitations placed upon women and the responsibilities borne by men to sustain their families during those periods, which is skillfully portrayed without being overly forceful in this series.
Another person commented, “This provides a charmingly lively and humorous depiction, while still being truthful and grim, about Australia’s treatment towards post-war immigrants and women striving for economic self-reliance through employment.
I really enjoyed the program; it was enjoyable, yet thought-provoking when it came to exploring cultural shifts.
Ladies in Black is available to stream on U.
The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25”, is available for purchase! Grab a copy at your local newsstands or buy it online, currently selling for only £8.99.
