2019 saw the arrival of a heartwarming musical film, which draws its inspiration from real-life occurrences. You can now stream it on Channel4’s online platform.
Under the guidance of Chris Foggin, Fisherman’s Friends recounts the true tale of a band of fishermen from Port Isaac, Cornwall, who were unexpectedly signed by Universal Records. This group, known for their sea shanties, even managed to secure a top 10 position on the charts with their first studio album.

In a twist, the character played by Line of Duty‘s Mays finds himself in Cornwall as a skeptical London music executive named Danny. During this trip for a friend’s bachelor party, his superior deceives him into endorsing a band that specializes in sea shanties.
Initially, a light-hearted contest transforms into a deeper experience for Danny, as he uncovers the essence of camaraderie and devotion.
The team consists of Jim (James Purefoy), Jago (David Hayman), Leadville (Dave Johns), and Rowan (Sam Swainsbury). Notably, the Sense8 actress Tuppence Middleton plays the role of Jim’s daughter Alwyn.
In the movie, every member of the real Fisherman’s Friends group makes an appearance, with cameos from Piers Ashworth, one of the scriptwriters, who confirmed to The Guardian that the singing in the film was a mix of the actual singers’ voices and those of the actors portraying them.
In 2022, the sequel to “Fisherman’s Friends: One and All” hit the screens, a movie that revolves around the band’s major performance at Glastonbury in 2011. The original film’s screenwriters, Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard, were the ones directing this follow-up, with Ashworth contributing to the sequel’s script as well.
Unfortunately, you can’t watch the sequel for free on streaming platforms. But if you’re up for a cozy two-movie marathon, you can either purchase or rent it from various digital sellers such as Amazon.
