Rebecca Rittenhouse, the star of His & Hers, has talked about the show’s surprising ending. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rittenhouse, who plays Lexy Jones (also known as Catherine Kelly), explained that she found out about the twist while she was already in Atlanta filming. She remembers learning about it during her costume fitting.

They accused me of being the killer, then immediately revealed the real murderer. It was a huge surprise – a really clever plot twist! I haven’t been that shocked by a show in a long time.

The series His & Hers, based on Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel, centers around Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson), a news anchor trying to rebuild her career after a personal loss. She returns to her hometown of Dahlonega to cover the shocking murder of a former high school friend, Rachel Hopkins (Jamie Tisdale). While reporting the story, Anna begins to reconnect with her husband, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), and her mother, Alice (Crystal Fox), who seems to be struggling with dementia.

I’m totally hooked on this show! It’s crazy because as Anna and Jack try to figure out who killed Rachel, two more people turn up dead – Helen Wang and Jack’s sister, Zoe. It’s even more unsettling because all three victims, including Rachel, were friends with Anna back in high school, and they were all together on her sixteenth birthday. It’s like whatever happened that night is coming back to haunt them!

In the series finale, Anna discovered that her rival at WSK TV news, Lexy Jones (who was secretly Rittenhouse), was actually Catherine Kelly – the last of their group. Catherine had been mistreated by Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. A flashback showed that on Anna’s sixteenth birthday, the trio took both Anna and Catherine to a party in the woods.

Anna and Catherine didn’t know that Rachel, who wasn’t a true friend, had secretly invited older boys to the party and then watched as they sexually assaulted Catherine, along with Helen and Zoe. Years later, as Anna drove to Lexy’s family’s lake house, she shockingly realized Lexy was actually Catherine. Fearing for her safety, Anna pulled a gun. A fight broke out between them, and Lexy was ultimately shot and killed by Priya Patel, a colleague of Jack’s who hopes to become a detective.

The final scene of His & Hers jumps forward in time, showing Anna pregnant and back together with Jack. She believes Lexy/Catherine was the one responsible for the murders. But when Anna returns to Dahlonega, she finds a letter from her mother, Alice, admitting she committed all the killings – except for the death of Lexy, which happened unintentionally.

Alice revealed a disturbing truth: she discovered what happened on the night of Anna’s birthday by watching an old video. Fueled by this, she promised to get revenge. The video showed that on Anna’s sixteenth birthday, Anna tried to help Catherine when she was being harassed by a group of boys, but was overpowered. Catherine, mistakenly believing Anna was involved in a plan with Rachel, left Anna alone and frightened in the woods, where she was then sexually assaulted.

Overwhelmed with grief over her daughter, Alice confessed she had faked her dementia and was responsible for the deaths of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. She carefully orchestrated everything to make it seem like someone else committed the crimes, and she always intended to blame Catherine, believing prison would be a just punishment. In her final words, Alice chillingly describes a mother’s love as unwavering and never-ending.

His & Hers is available to stream on Netflix.
