2019 saw the arrival of a heartwarming musical film, based on real-life incidents, boasting an impressive ensemble of British actors such as Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Dave Johns, and Tuppence Middleton.
The film has been affectionately dubbed a “British treasure” by IMDb viewers, with many commenting that it brings smiles from beginning to end.

If it appeals to you, you can now stream Fisherman’s Friends for free on Channel 4’s online platform, having been aired on Film4 during the weekend.
Under the guidance of director Chris Foggin, Fisherman’s Friends recounts the true tale of a band of Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac, who against all odds, were signed by Universal Records and surprisingly managed to secure a top 10 position on charts with their debut album, featuring traditional sea shanties.
In the series “Line of Duty,” the character played by Mays transitions from a skeptical London music executive named Danny to a reluctant attendee at a colleague’s bachelor party in Cornwall. However, his boss deceives him into endorsing a musical group that specializes in sea shanties while he is there.
Initially seen as a playful contest, the experience evolved into a deeper realization of the essence of camaraderie and devotion for Danny.
This ensemble consists of Jim (played by Purefoy), Jago (portrayed by David Hayman), Leadville (performed by Johns), and Rowan (acted by Sam Swainsbury). Middleton takes on the role of Jim’s daughter, Alwyn.
Or in a shorter version: The team includes Jim (Purefoy), Jago (David Hayman), Leadville (Johns), Rowan (Sam Swainsbury), and Middleton as Alwyn, Jim’s daughter.
In the movie, every member of the actual Fisherman’s Friends group makes an appearance, and it was revealed by script co-writer Piers Ashworth to The Guardian that the songs in the film were a combination of the original singers’ voices and those of the actors who portrayed them.
The second installment of “Fisherman’s Friends: One and All,” a movie centered around their monumental 2011 performance at Glastonbury, was unveiled in 2022. The directorial duties for this continuation were handled by Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard, the writers of the original film, who also contributed to the script for the sequel along with Ashworth.
I was really hoping to catch the sequel without paying extra, but unfortunately, it’s not currently up for free streaming. Luckily, I can watch it on Channel 4’s streaming service starting this coming Sunday!
Individuals eager for a cozy double feature don’t have to wait; they can purchase or stream it from multiple digital vendors, such as Amazon Prime Video.
Fisherman’s Friends is available to watch for free on Channel 4’s streaming service.
The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is available! You can purchase it from your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
