A ’90s-set thriller praised as ‘masterpiece’ by viewers has just been added to UK streaming
At long last, a highly praised French-Hungarian mini-series can now be streamed in the United Kingdom, all thanks to Disney+.
A “Rematch” is a historical, psychological thriller in English that portrays the 1997 chess contest between Gary Kasparov, the world’s top chess player, and a computer created by IBM.
The movie “Rematch” tells the story of an exciting chess competition from 1997, where Gary Kasparov, the world champion, faced off against a computer built by IBM. This tale is thrilling due to its historical and psychological elements.
In the lead role as Kasparov, actor Christian Cooke (known for his work on “Doctor Who” and “Ordeal by Innocence”), is joined by a stellar cast that includes Tom Austen from “Grantchester”, Luca Pasqualino from “Rivals”, Sarah Bolger of “Mayans MC”, and Aidan Quinn, who starred in “Elementary”. All lend their talent to this series.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that the six-episode miniseries that aired last year on RTS1 in Switzerland and Arte, the French-German service, is now accessible to UK audiences! Thanks to Disney+, you can binge-watch the entire series right away. Enjoy the ride!
Since the television series wasn’t widely recognized beyond Europe until recently, it has been challenging to find reviews. However, one viewer on IMDb did commend the show, calling it a “masterpiece.
As a devoted chess enthusiast myself, I wholeheartedly agree that the series “Rematch” is an absolute must-watch. The performances are simply outstanding, and the attention to historical detail is nothing short of remarkable. Indeed, this drama skillfully depicts history in a way that feels deeply authentic and captivating.
The concept for “Rematch” had been circulating for some time, but the triumph of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” featuring Anya Taylor-Joy as a gifted American chess player, made it simpler to convince people about its potential.
Man, I couldn’t help but notice the buzz around ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ – turns out it’s all about chess! And boy, did it make a splash for me.” This is how a gamer might express their reaction to learning about The Queen’s Gambit.
Out of nowhere, it seemed like everyone worldwide was getting into chess! With our series on hold due to the pandemic, it felt like the universe was giving us a nudge. Turns out, the world needed a refresher on this classic game and we didn’t have to spend time explaining its rules anymore.
According to Monica Levy, who successfully pitched the show to Federation Studios, it undeniably had a favorable influence on the public. As a result, chess gained popularity among both youth and adults, with numerous clubs springing up where they could play.
Rematch is available to stream now on Disney+ in the UK.
