Jessie Buckley has been consistently praised for her incredible work in Hamnet throughout awards season, and most expect her to win Best Actress at the Oscars. Unless something unexpected happens, she’s the clear frontrunner – though you never know what the Academy voters will decide!
If Buckley wins, as many predict, she’ll be the first actress since Renée Zellweger in 2020 to win the top acting prize at all five major awards shows: the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Oscars, and the Actor Awards (previously known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards).
Honestly, I’m way more excited that Buckley’s making history as the first Irish actor to win Best Actress! We’ve had some amazing nominees before – Saoirse Ronan got nominated three times, and Ruth Negga was incredible too – but they just couldn’t quite pull off the win. This is huge for Irish representation, and I’m so happy for her.
Daniel Day-Lewis and Cillian Murphy have both won Best Actor Oscars, with Murphy’s win coming for Oppenheimer. However, Brenda Fricker is the only Irish actress to ever win an Oscar, receiving the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in My Left Foot.
Sherwood Buckley isn’t the only Oscar nominee who has a chance to make history this weekend.

Sean Penn is aiming for his third Oscar, having already won Best Actor for Mystic River and Milk. Meanwhile, if Amy Madigan wins for Weapons, she’ll break the record for the longest wait between a first Oscar nomination and a first win – a full 40 years.
