Gwyneth Paltrow seemed to gently criticize famous celebrities who wear elaborate costumes to the yearly Met Gala in New York City.
The actress, 53, recently turned heads at the Valentino fashion show in Rome and recently shared some thoughts on the subject in a post on her Goop website.
Despite once calling the Met Gala ‘not fun at all,’ the Academy Award-winning actor has made a few appearances on its red carpet over time.
Gwyneth Paltrow recently revealed her seven favorite red carpet outfits, including a yellow Chloe gown she wore to the 2019 Met Gala – her last appearance at the event so far.
The Met Gala’s theme that year was ‘Camp,’ but the actress clarified that she’d always stay true to herself. She wouldn’t, for example, wear a silly costume like a hot dog, because that just isn’t her style.
It’s important for me to always be genuine and authentic. I don’t want to pretend to be someone I’m not – I simply want to be myself, just dressed up.
Katy Perry was also a guest that year and famously dressed up as a hamburger.
In 2023, Jared Leto famously wore a cat costume on the red carpet, while Zendaya stunned in a Cinderella-themed LED ballgown back in 2019.
Gwyneth Paltrow explained that there are generally two approaches to the Met Ball: some attendees choose costumes, while others opt for formal evening gowns. She personally always prefers the gown look.
It was incredibly light, comfortable, and had a soft, flowing quality – almost like a lemon chiffon pie in texture and feel.
The light blue Prada dress she wore to the 2012 Met Gala was also named one of the best seven outfits.
In a 2013 interview with USA Today, Gwyneth Paltrow said she would never attend the event again.
‘Do you want me to be honest?… It sucked,’ she told the outlet.
I’m definitely not going back. It wasn’t enjoyable at all – it was incredibly hot and way too crowded.
She shared her opinions about the Met Gala while on the radio show, The Kyle And Jackie O Show, according to E! News.
You often imagine it’ll be incredibly exciting and filled with famous faces, thinking, “This is going to be amazing!”
Gwyneth Paltrow described the event as overwhelmingly hot and crowded, with people constantly pushing. She said this year was particularly rough and that she didn’t enjoy it.
Kanye West had been a performer at the Met Gala in 2013.
Let me tell you, things got pretty intense with Drake the other night. From what I understand, he was really getting into the performance, almost playfully, but then something clearly frustrated him. He ended up tossing his microphone – total stage drama, honestly!
Other celebrities have voiced negative feelings towards the event, such as Jennifer Garner.
Jennifer Garner shared in a Vogue interview that while she found a certain event a bit frightening, she still considered it a ‘majestic and special’ night and hasn’t returned since.
Demi Lovato shared with Billboard that she had a very negative experience at the event in 2016.
Okay, so let me tell you, this one celebrity? Ugh, seriously the worst. They were just awful to be around, totally made everyone uncomfortable. It was like a super exclusive little club, and I just couldn’t stand it. I remember feeling so anxious I actually wanted to grab a drink, just to cope with being near them. Honestly, it was a nightmare.
In 2021, Quannah Chasinghorse described the event to Insider as a ‘strange experience’.
I remember just standing there, looking at everyone, and feeling incredibly lonely. It felt like no one even noticed me, or bothered to ask how I was doing. It was clear everyone was just focused on themselves.
Gwyneth Paltrow stated in 2013 she wouldn’t attend the Met Gala again, but she surprised everyone by showing up in both 2017 and 2019.
The actress has been working a lot lately and was recently spotted at the Valentino Fall/Winter 2026 fashion show in Rome on Thursday.
She stood out in a bright green minidress, complemented by white tights and blue shoes.
Gwyneth Paltrow recently appeared in the movie Marty Supreme, starring alongside Timothée Chalamet and Odessa A’zion.
The sports drama, directed by Josh Safdie, has received nine nominations for the 2026 Oscars.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 15th, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
