Mel Schilling’s MAFS UK replacement is revealed as John Aikenas – after revealing she stepping down following her terminal cancer diagnosis

Following Mel Schilling’s recent announcement about her cancer diagnosis, Channel 4 has announced who will take her place on the UK version of Married At First Sight.

Mel, 54, shared the devastating news that her cancer has spread to her brain and is now untreatable. She poignantly expressed her uncertainty about her future, writing, ‘I don’t know how long I have left’.

The Married at First Sight star recently announced she was leaving the Australian season, and now Channel 4 has confirmed that her colleague, John Aiken, will be joining the UK version of the show in her place.

Following the news about Mel’s health, a Channel 4 representative shared a statement on Instagram saying that everyone at the channel is deeply saddened and sending their love and support to Mel and her family.

Throughout her work on five seasons of Married at First Sight UK and twelve seasons of the Australian version, Mel has become a cherished member of the Channel 4 team. Many of us consider her not just a coworker, but a friend.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of personalities come and go, but let me tell you, this woman is truly special. What I admire most is how she effortlessly combines wisdom, genuine warmth, a fantastic sense of humor, and incredible kindness. It’s no surprise that everyone connected with the show – the crew, the participants, and even us viewers – just absolutely loves and respects her. She’s a rare find, honestly.

Married at First Sight UK is currently being filmed. Thankfully, with Mel’s permission, her friend and colleague John Aiken – an expert from the Australian version of the show – is joining as an expert for this season.

Mel is well-known for appearing on the commitment ceremony couch, helping countless couples navigate dramatic dinner parties, emotional conversations, and very public splits.

The actress shared that she received a colon cancer diagnosis in December 2023 and underwent surgery to remove a 5-centimeter tumor.

Mel recently learned that her cancer had spread to her lungs in 2024, and over the Christmas holiday, doctors discovered it had also spread to her brain.

She shared a deeply moving message, saying she doesn’t know how much time she has left, but she’s determined to keep fighting and will be comforted by the love of her family and friends.

Mel shared that over the last two years, she completed 16 rounds of chemotherapy all while filming Married at First Sight.

She was scheduled to begin a new medical trial in March, but over the Christmas holiday, she started getting severe headaches and lost feeling on her right side.

Tests revealed the cancer has spread to her brain, and doctors have determined there are no further treatment options. She shared that her health is declining rapidly, writing, ‘My light is starting to fade – and quickly.’

Mel shared a photo with her husband, Gareth, and their 10-year-old daughter, Madison, along with a statement explaining that she was diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023. A lemon-sized tumor was found during a scan, and it was successfully removed – something many people already knew. She was initially told the cancer was gone.

In late February 2024, a routine scan revealed small nodules on my lungs. Sadly, the cancer had spread, and my life was instantly altered once more.

During the two years I filmed Married at First Sight, I went through 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Then I received some incredible news: I qualified for a new clinical trial tailored to my specific genetic makeup, scheduled to begin in March 2026. This gave me renewed hope that I could overcome my illness.

‘Over Christmas, however, I began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.

Following numerous tests, I learned the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain. Even after radiation treatment, my doctors have informed me there are no more options available. Hearing that news has completely changed my outlook.

That’s where things stand with me. My health is declining rapidly, but I’m still here, still putting up a fight, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by amazing love and support.

Everyday things are now really challenging, and I’m needing a lot of help from my wonderful family. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m determined to keep fighting for as long as I can, and I’m so grateful to have the love and support of my family and friends around me.

I was so touched by all the incredibly kind messages of support I received at the beginning of this challenge. They’ve truly meant the world to me and have given me the strength to keep going. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

My most important advice is this: if you notice something unusual or concerning about your health, please see a doctor. It could be a lifesaver.

‘These two beside me are my everything. With love and gratitude, Mell’.

Ella Morgan shared a heartfelt reaction to the news, saying Mel has positively impacted so many lives with her advocacy and insightful advice on Married at First Sight. She described Mel as the heart of the show and believes she always will be.

I feel incredibly fortunate, as do many others, to have Mel in our lives and to have the chance to work with and know her. Sending my heartfelt love to Mel, her family, and all who care about her, both in her personal life and at work.

Former Married at First Sight Australia participant Lucinda Light shared her sadness, writing: ‘Heartbreaking news. It’s just not fair. We all loved Mel so much.’

I was really surprised to hear that Mel is leaving Married at First Sight Australia! She’s been such a constant on the show, ever since season two, so it’s going to feel very different without her. She announced her departure just last month, and I’m sad to see her go.

Mel explained that she made the difficult decision after a lot of thought, as she’s been dealing with health issues and the difficulties of living between Australia and the UK.

After twelve amazing seasons, I’ve decided to leave my position as an expert on Married At First Sight Australia. It was a difficult decision, but I feel it’s the right time for me to move on.

I didn’t make this decision easily. With ongoing health issues and needing to spend significant time – up to three months each year – away from my family while living in the UK, it’s simply become too difficult to continue.

She explained that she needs to prioritize her family, health, and personal time, and is making changes to ensure those things are central to her life.
