Bandai Needs to Make These Perfect Grade Gunpla Next

Since 1998, the Perfect Grade series has represented the highest quality in Gundam model kits. The recently released Perfect Grade Unleashed Nu Gundam takes Gunpla to a whole new level of detail and size. At over $650, it’s a massive kit that’s much larger than most others, and it leaves fans wondering what Bandai will create next for the Perfect Grade line.

Top picks for the next Perfect Grade Gunpla release

Perfect Grade Gundam model kits haven’t been released very often lately—it’s been five years since the last one. So, when Bandai announces a new release, it’s a big deal! Here’s a look at both the kits fans are hoping for and those that seem most likely to appear.

PG Ball

A Perfect Grade kit priced under $100 would be fantastic, and with Bandai unlikely to reissue the Skygrasper, I think the Ball is the perfect choice. The existing Master Grade Ball kits offer a solid foundation for a Perfect Grade version, and it would be an excellent entry point for builders new to the PG scale.

PG Core Fighter (1/35)

As a huge fan of Bandai’s Perfect Grade models, I’ve been thinking… they’ve always stuck to 1/60 scale, which is cool, but I’d really love to see them tackle some of the smaller vehicles – things like the Core Fighter or other support craft – in a super-detailed 1/35 scale. They actually did a 1/35 Core Fighter a while back with the U.C. Hard Graph line, and it looked amazing, but those are long gone and won’t be re-released. It wouldn’t take a ton of new tooling, and I think a sub-$100 Perfect Grade in that smaller scale would be a massive hit!

PG F91

The F91 Gundam could be a relatively affordable addition to Bandai’s Perfect Grade line. Despite being a 1/60 scale model, it could be priced around $150, which would make it one of the more accessible PGs. It’s been a while since a new model kit of this suit was released, so a new version would be welcome.

PG GM

A new version of the PG GM feels like a guaranteed success. Bandai could save money on development by reusing parts from the Perfect Grade Unicorn Gundam. It’s surprising that, despite the GM’s popularity, the original kit hasn’t been updated in a while – it never even received a Master Grade 3.0 treatment. It’s time for this classic design to get some attention! Bandai could also release many variations of this kit, just like they’ve done with the P-Bandai GM series.

PG God (Burning) Gundam

I haven’t watched G Gundam myself, but I know it’s a beloved mobile suit among fans. The design is really striking, and I’m surprised there isn’t a Perfect Grade model of it yet. Considering how slowly Perfect Grade kits are released, it might be a while before one comes out, but it’s possible they’re already working on it.

PG Gundam X

It’s disappointing that Bandai hasn’t given much attention to War Gundam X in Western markets. The series is really unique and could have been the next Gundam Wing on Toonami. If that had happened, we’d probably have a high-quality model kit by now. But currently, the only official release is an older Blu-ray set, though you can still watch it on Tubi. It’s a shame, because the Gundam X mobile suit is incredibly cool, and it deserves a premium model kit with all the details, especially for its impressive Satellite Cannon.

PG Sazabi

Bandai really pushed the boundaries with their Perfect Grade Nu Gundam, and the next logical step is to create a Perfect Grade version of the Sazabi – the mobile suit it battled in the movie Char’s Counterattack. The Sazabi is similar in height to the Nu Gundam, but it’s much more heavily built and would likely be the largest Perfect Grade model ever made. Interestingly, despite its size, the Sazabi might actually be simpler to manufacture because its remote weapons, called funnels, are less complex than those on the Nu Gundam. It will probably be a while before Bandai tackles another project of this scale, giving me time to find a good place to display my Nu Gundam!

PG Tallgeese

Bandai seems to have waited too long to release a Perfect Grade Tallgeese model kit. While there’s a good option from another company for fans who want a 1/60 scale kit, I’d still like to see an official version from Bandai. The Tallgeese is a great fit for the Perfect Grade line because of its many verniers and the Dober Gun. I’m hoping we might get a surprise announcement for Gundam Wing’s 30th anniversary, but I’m not optimistic.

PG Turn A

Syd Mead’s design for the Turn A Gundam is fantastic, and I strongly defend it. It’s likely the most powerful mobile suit in the series, and its unique look makes me really excited to see how a Perfect Grade version would be. Even though the Master Grade kit is older, it’s still excellent, and Bandai could easily upscale it to 1/60 scale and I’d be thrilled. I’d also love to see the Turn X at that size, but getting the Master Grade is hard enough, so I don’t expect a Perfect Grade version anytime soon.

PGU Zaku II

Let’s be honest: the Perfect Grade Zaku is a really disappointing kit. I was expecting it to be similar in quality to the Mk. II, which came out shortly after, but it’s nowhere near as good. While the inner frame is okay, attaching the armor is a nightmare – it’s arguably the worst armor connection design in all of Gunpla. The armor pieces are large and only held on by a single peg in a polycap, leading to constant misalignment and frustration. On top of that, it has huge seamlines and lacks detail in many areas, like the completely blank shield. Overall, the PG Zaku is a major letdown.

Since the Perfect Grade line has very few kits from the Zeon faction and their standard grunt units, the Zaku II would be a logical next release. There are also many different versions of the Zaku II, giving Bandai plenty of opportunities to sell exclusive and add-on kits through their P-Bandai platform.
