Many actors today have seen their careers boosted by appearing in movies and shows based on comic books. Jon Bernthal is definitely one of them, but he’s also a great example of an actor who really became well-known thanks to these kinds of roles.
Jon Bernthal first gained widespread recognition playing the intense Shane Walsh on the popular AMC series The Walking Dead. He later earned praise for his portrayal of the ruthless vigilante, Frank Castle. His performance was crucial to the success of the Netflix series The Punisher, helping it stand out from typical superhero shows.
The Punisher Is a Gritty Crime Drama Disguised as a Comic Book Adaptation
The Punisher first appeared in Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. He began as an enemy of Spider-Man, but his backstory soon evolved. The story revealed he was a war veteran who, after the murder of his family, dedicated his life to punishing criminals—making him a surprisingly complex character for mainstream comics.
The Punisher has appeared in several movies, including earlier adaptations and later films starring Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson. However, Jon Bernthal’s performance in the Netflix series created by Steve Lightfoot is widely considered the best live-action version of the character. The series really focuses on the Punisher’s story and his quest for revenge.
In the first season of The Punisher, Frank partners with a former NSA analyst to hunt down the people who destroyed their lives, which ultimately leads to a confrontation with his old Army friend, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes). Season two finds Frank battling Russo, now known as Jigsaw, while also protecting a teenage girl (Giorgia Whigham) who stumbles upon a dangerous secret.
This Emmy-nominated show started as a spin-off from another Marvel series that used to be exclusive to Netflix, focusing on its street-level heroes. However, it tells a mostly independent story, and it’s notably more realistic and down-to-earth than many other Marvel projects. The result is a captivating story about a man seeking revenge, offering both intense action and a deeply emotional character study.
Netflix’s The Punisher Played a Key Role in Daredevil’s Success
In 2017, Netflix released The Punisher, building on the popularity of Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle. He’d first appeared as the character a year earlier in season two of Daredevil, and it was immediately obvious that his version of the Punisher was meant to have his own series.
Many fans consider this season to be the best of the series, which follows the story of a lawyer who fights crime as a masked vigilante. A major reason for this is the introduction of The Punisher. The storyline focuses on Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and his law partner, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), who take on the case of Frank Castle when his violent actions lead to legal problems.
Murdock’s Daredevil often clashes with the war veteran, creating a personal conflict stemming from their different ideas about what justice truly means. Both heroes strongly debate whether it’s right for them to take the law into their own hands, acting as judge, jury, and punisher.
The complex, often conflicting relationship between Daredevil and the Punisher, which eventually developed into a reluctant partnership, made the show even more intense and meaningful. It’s fitting that the Punisher returned in 2025 for the show’s final season, culminating in another memorable team-up.
It’s understandable, though still frustrating, to hear that… This actor, currently enjoying a huge surge in popularity and demand following his Emmy win, simply hasn’t been able to find the time to reprise his role as Matt Murdock.
Fans will be happy to hear that Charlie Cox is returning as Daredevil, and this won’t be the last we see of the character. Also generating a lot of excitement for Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man movie is a showdown between The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.
