While a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie isn’t currently planned by Marvel, the actors who played the characters have varying opinions about making one. The 2023 film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, wrapped up the team’s story arc, especially after director James Gunn moved to DC Studios to lead it. Now that there’s a gap in Guardians content within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, people are wondering if the team’s adventures could continue in future films.
Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn, stars of Guardians of the Galaxy, recently discussed the possibility of a fourth movie. At Emerald City Comic-Con, Sean Gunn shared he had complicated feelings about returning, saying it would depend on the creative team and script. While acknowledging the decision isn’t up to him, he didn’t rule out the idea.
Honestly, it’s a bit beyond what I’d normally be involved with. If the project moves forward – if they can find the right people and a good script – then my involvement would depend on who’s leading it. By that stage, someone else would likely already be working on it, so I’m not sure what my role would be.
Rooker firmly stated that his experience with this franchise was comparable to his time on The Walking Dead. He described the third movie as “incredible” and expressed relief that it wasn’t extended, believing that further installments would only serve to make more money without adding anything worthwhile.
The third installment was amazing, but also really sad knowing it was the final one, which makes it particularly meaningful. I absolutely loved filming the Christmas special – it was a blast! Honestly, it’s good it ended there. Any more would have been like letting a show drag on endlessly, like The Walking Dead. Let’s just leave it at that.
Klementieff didn’t expect a fourth movie, and the team never discussed the possibility of making another one.
I’m not sure. We never discussed making a Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4. The plan was always for it to be a three-movie series.
After the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the only other project featuring the Guardians was Season 2 of I Am Groot, which premiered on Disney+ in September 2023. Before Vol. 3 came out, director James Gunn announced it would be his last movie in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, as he was moving to DC Studios full-time.
Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 Happen in the MCU?

James Gunn remains committed to DC Studios, continuing to develop the ‘Gods and Monsters’ lineup with Peter Safran. This year will see the release of several new projects, including Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface, keeping him very busy as Marvel also moves forward with its own plans.
Currently, there aren’t any confirmed plans for another Guardians of the Galaxy movie, despite speculation that the team might show up in one of the next two Avengers films, which are expected to have large casts. If the Guardians do return, it’s likely a different director would be in charge, since James Gunn now works for a rival studio.
Although Phase 7 is currently being developed, the Guardians could potentially be part of the larger narrative when more details are revealed.
Because the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy is currently unclear, it will probably be a while before fans find out if there will be any new movies featuring the team.
