You can now watch Andrew Scott’s critically acclaimed drama, Pride, on BBC iPlayer. This follows a broadcast of the 2014 film – starring Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Dominic West, and George MacKay – on BBC Three last night.
This movie is based on the real events of a group of LGBTQ+ activists who came to the aid of striking coal miners in Wales during 1984, when Margaret Thatcher was in power.
Both lesbians and gay men, and the striking miners, were disliked by Margaret Thatcher. Mark Ashton, who founded Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, believed a show of support could bridge the gap between the two groups. However, negative press coverage and a cool reaction from the miners’ families put his idea at risk.

People in the UK can now watch the movie on iPlayer, and it will stay there for a month.
The film Pride was highly praised by critics. It received a 93% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 155 reviews, and Variety described it as a truly enjoyable and popular movie.
What to Read Next
The inspiring story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), a group largely forgotten by history, is so uplifting that it’s surprising it took thirty years for someone to make a film about it.
Okay, so I checked out some reviews, and the Arizona Republic said it was a really uplifting movie – like, it genuinely made them feel good. They also said it was captivating, meaningful, and inspiring, which is awesome. Then Time Out called it a super joyful film, packed with love and warmth, but also honest about the fact that taking risks and being different can be tough and even sad. Basically, it sounds like a movie with heart!

According to The Pink Lens (via RT), the film is hilariously funny, with the cast members playing off each other’s energy in a lively and dynamic way. However, the humor is balanced by touching moments, as the story portrays two different communities both in need of assistance and understanding.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed Matilda the Musical, and written by Stephen Beresford of Tolkien fame, Pride features a talented cast including Ben Schnetzer (from 3 Body Problem), Joe Gilgun (Brassic), Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer), Faye Marsay (Andor), Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), and Freddie Fox (Slow Horses).
Pride is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
