Hollywood’s biggest night, the 98th Academy Awards, is happening this Sunday. The FBI recently reported that Iran was planning a possible attack on the event using drones. Security is always tight at the Dolby Theatre, and extra precautions are being taken around the theater and red carpet to protect those attending.
Deadline shared the report sent out to law enforcement, which reads:
We’ve learned that Iran may have planned a surprise attack using drones launched from a ship off the U.S. coast, potentially targeting California, if the U.S. were to attack Iran. This information suggests the plan was considered as of early February 2026. However, we currently have no details about when, how, or exactly where this alleged attack would occur, or who would carry it out.
It’s currently unclear if these claims are true, but the FBI’s involvement suggests there was substantial evidence of a potential attack. A source told the news outlet that security measures have been significantly increased – going above and beyond normal procedures – and that many protective steps are happening behind the scenes.

Okay, so Conan O’Brien is back to host the Oscars, and honestly, after the buzz he got at the last ceremony, it’s a smart move. This year’s show is also introducing a brand new category recognizing casting directors, which is fantastic! Now, if you’re used to Jimmy Kimmel hosting – and his tendency to pepper the show with political commentary – Conan is going to feel pretty different. Kimmel really went after Trump in past years, but Conan seems more interested in poking fun at Hollywood itself, rather than current events. Don’t expect a lot of political jabs this time around; he’s aiming for silly and absurd, and I think that’s a refreshing change of pace.
Raj Kapoor, an executive producer for the Oscars, spoke at a press conference today to address safety concerns for guests and attendees, as reported by Variety. He stated that measures are in place to ensure everyone’s well-being.
Our top priority is ensuring everyone attending or enjoying the show – including our fans – feels safe, protected, and welcome, even outside the venue. As the production team, we take this responsibility very seriously and are working closely with a dedicated support team to make that happen.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also responded to reports about possible retaliation from Iran following U.S. military actions, doing so during a separate press conference.
I’m working closely with security and intelligence experts, including those at the California Office of Emergency Services, to keep track of potential dangers to California – including anything related to the situation in the Middle East. Right now, we don’t see any specific, immediate threats, but we’re ready to respond to any emergency that might arise.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15th, and you can watch it live on ABC and Hulu starting at 7 PM Eastern Time.
